SIL Asks Host To Keep Their Cat Out Of The Guest Room, Host Refuses

Can you make demands when you are a guest at your host’s house?

I really don’t think so because being too demanding is going to make you sound like you are the owner and they are the guest. If you have chosen to be at someone’s place, I think it is fair to spend the time by their rules because it is their place and not yours. I must clear one thing here, by demanding I do not mean demanding toothpaste, asking for a new towel, suggesting something to cook, this sort of stuff is okay. By demanding I mean taking control over the house, telling you to do this and don’t do this, basically restricting you and your family members. That sort of demand just doesn’t work and shouldn’t be accepted either.

In today’s story, Reddit user fluffythecat38 posted their matter before the sacred community of AITA. She shares how their sister-in-law and brother were at their place for a visit and the SIL made a demand that they didn’t want to fulfill. The SIL demanded the host to not allow their cats into the guest room. This would obviously restrict the cats from freely moving around the house making them feel annoyed. So the host refused and went to ask the internet if she was wrong for doing so.

3. Very understandable. You don’t want to restrict cats who have previously been through trauma. You want them to be as free as possible.

4. Fluffy went on an exploration mission and ended up scaring the visiting couple who entered the room she was already in.

5. SIL after that event made about a hundred demands regarding the hosts’ cats to be positioned somewhere where they wouldn’t cross paths with the couple.

6. A very fair answer. Just close the door and the cat won’t come in.

7. What even is SIL on about?

I am very surprised at this one. First of all, it’s just a cat. It’s not going to eat you alive or something. Be good with it and it will be good for you. Second of all, Fluffy only went inside because the door was open. If the couple just close the door, no such event would take place again. And then just because a cat caught you off guard does not mean you get entitled to order your host around and demand the cats be restricted to another spot in the house.

The host was NTA for refusing to restrict the cats. A relationship with your pet is very strong and keeping them away from you is like keeping your own baby away from you.

Here’s what the internet had to say:

9. It’s the cats’ house, not her’s.

10. By restricting the cats, their routine would’ve been disrupted and a sudden routine change can cause some serious issues.

11. SIL was never in any position to make demands.

12. Request could’ve been considered reasonable if the couple came over for a little while. They came to stay, so they can’t really make any demands.

13. Cats don’t deserve to be locked.
