Let’s first discuss the distinction between service animals and emotional support animals. Only service animals are covered by the ADA, and emotional support animals are NOT considered to be service animals. Service dogs provide their owners with vital life-saving assistance, thus being apart from them is actually dangerous for them. Even though emotional support dogs are absolutely valid and charming, there is no immediate danger to their humans if they are separated from them.
In this instance, the original poster has a service dog since she is prone to seizures. The OP went out for a meal with their service dog at a nearby cafe since they wanted to unwind. Sadly, a nosy and disrespectful Karen decided to check into the legitimacy of the service dog. She pestered the OP and their dog throughout their meal, until she was eventually instructed to “STFU and sit down.” And we might add, rather rightly. OP has a kind heart, though, and thinks they might have come off as a jerk in this circumstance. We assert that the OP has every right to an enjoyable meal free from intrusion by obnoxious and nosy people.
