Redditor Asks If Calling Animal Control About Neighbor’s Freezing Dog Without Consulting Neighbor First Is Justifiable

In bone-chilling cold, like 0°F with biting winds, deciding what to do about a neglected dog left outside becomes a dilemma. Meet Reddit user u/reddof, who noticed their neighbor’s puppy, a blend of shepherd and lab, always out there, never frolicking or seeking shelter, especially in the freezing weather. The poor dog had no refuge from the elements. Seeing this, OP felt concerned but hesitated to confront the neighbor due to rumors about their difficult nature. Instead of direct confrontation, OP reached out to animal control to intervene. Animal control assessed the situation and decided to rescue the dog, leaving a notice for the owner. Upon finding out it was OP who had called animal control, the neighbor confronted him demanding compensation for fines and expenses.

Despite the neighbor’s demands, OP stood firm, prioritizing the well-being of the dog over avoiding conflict. The matter was taken to the courts of the AITA community by OP via the subreddit “Am I The A$$hole?” to know if using the indirect method of calling animal control instead of talking to the neighbor to save the freezing dog made him an AH or not.

1. Let’s find out!

2. I don’t know about OP but this makes me want to call the dog owner a major AH before going through any details.

3. Either you are a Siberian Husky or you do not stand for longer than 30 seconds in such cold weather. There is no third option.

4. OP has just set the stage and I am already so furious at the dog owner but also extremely sad for the poor dog at the same time.

5. OP didn’t talk to the neighbor himself about this because he had heard of some bad experiences with those who had tried communicating with him in the past.

6. This is true, to be fair. If the owner cared, he would have never put his dog out there in the extremely cold weather.

7. Instead of confronting the owner directly about the situation, OP called animal control. They found the situation to be really messy and decided to take the dog with them leaving behind a notice for the neighbor.

8. The next day when the neighbor came over to ask OP who called animal control, he admitted it was him because he could not see the dog on the brink of de*th freezing by itself.

I wish OP knew someone from the police. Maybe he did and was just too nice, who knows? If he did know a police officer, he should have cooked something up to get the neighbor jailed. This was outrageous behavior. Animal control does not take animals in for no reason. They saw the life of that dog was endangered. And only the neighbor is to be blamed for all this. I hope the dog is okay.

9. The neighbor argued OP should have talked to him first instead of reporting the case to the authorities.

10. The neighbor complained OP took his kids’ pet away from them but he shared he had never seen the kids play with the dog…ever.

11. OP figured if the animal control people took the pet away it meant there was something seriously concerning going on with the dog’s health. So he felt he did the right thing.

12. The neighbor demanded the fine amount as well as all cover expenses from OP but he refused and got called an AH for it.

13. OP shared an edit paying gratitude to those who supported him, it made him confident.

14. OP shared he has decided to remain firm and won’t be paying anything to the dog owner no matter how much he demands compensation.
