Woman Asks Redditors If She Did The Wrong Thing By Not Giving Her Dog To Her Nephew

This woman’s nephew asked for their most prized possession before leaving.

A human’s bond with their pet animal is extremely strong. The only power holding this insuperable bond together is love and whoever’s been in love would know there are no limits to love, the more you give the more that animal takes…and vice versa. It’s a beautiful life with your pet animal, that’s what every pet owner says. And that is because no matter how stressful and difficult things were for you or your pet before adoption, after being coupled together all of that gets transformed into happiness, joy, and entertainment. That animal makes it its duty that you stay happy and, more importantly, healthy.

Now that I have given a pretty good description of why it is not easy for an owner and their pet to separate, imagine if someone comes up to you, a person you genuinely care about, and says they want your pet animal because they love it. You will get confused for a second but would ultimately say no because that would be unfair to your pet and the person wanting the pet may not be capable of taking on the heavy responsibilities that come with adoption.

In today’s story, something similar happens. Reddit users u/flynnsmom982173 share that her sister along with her nephew moved into their house after her sister broke up with her ex-husband. During that time, her nephew Jayden falls in love with her dog Flynn. And when the time comes for the sister and Jayden to move out and in with her new boyfriend, Steve, Jayden approaches OP and asks if he can take Flynn along because he deeply loves the dog and can’t live without it.

5. Before leaving, Jayden asked if he could take Flynn with him to which OP said no because it was her dog, and Steve also didn’t like the presence of big dogs either.

6. Flynn also doesn’t know how big of a responsibility it is to adopt.

7. For some reason, OP’s sister decided they owned Flynn and demanded they get him.

8. OP is being too sweet. She doesn’t need to give that many explanations.

9. The sister made all attempts to convince OP into giving Flynn away but nothing worked.

10. And of course, OP’s sister suddenly starts hating her just because she couldn’t take “No” for an answer.

This is so bad. OP’s sister is someone she spent her childhood with, and learned everything with, so it means she cares a lot about her. And then there’s Flynn. OP’s dog means everything to her and is the reason for her happiness. By making her choose between the two, the sister did a terrible thing and this must’ve caused OP a lot of stress. You don’t give your dogs away just because others fall in love with them and want them. Jayden’s request was in no way going to be catered to. I would say the OP was NTA.

Here’s what people on the internet had to say about this:

11. OP should follow these directions as someone’s entitlement may cause her to lose her dog.

12. It would’ve been very unrealistic of OP had she given Flynn away to an 11-year-old.

13. Not a great way to return the favor.

14. Just because someone loves a dog doesn’t necessarily mean they can have it.

“One of my saddest beginning rescue cases. This senior declawed girl was living in a hotel storm drain starving. As soon as I got the call, I rushed there. She had to be sedated and shaved, as seen in the before photo due to matting. She was so thin. The rest are in her forever home 1.5 years later!”
