Animals are more empathetic than we think.
While it is true that there is a circle of life and predator animals prey on the weak ones but that is what humans do as well. We prey on the weak animals as well so we fit into the animal kingdom in a sense. However, just because there are predators and prey doesn’t mean sometimes this distinction doesn’t matter. Sometimes animals will go out of their way to help another animal even if their species might be at odds.

It is actually pretty common for domestic animals to form a bond when they are together. So sometimes they do end up adopting the other species’ children if something happens to the parent. It is an instinct and they do not really choose to do it. This is known as kin selection and it happens to a lot of species. There might be another reason for this as well if the animals think that both of them would be better off together.
