OP’s bookkeeper, who has been working for him for a long time and is now retiring, was initially hired almost 25 years ago. OP recalls how he met the bookkeeper when he was estimating a metal working job 100 miles away from his shop:

The customer they poached the bookkeeper from got into tax, employee pay, and state/federal regulation problems six months after she left.

OP has seen her use subtle tactics to talk her way out of fines or penalties, without actually snitching on her former employer. OP is impressed by her slyness and considers her “OUR sly girl”.

OP warns not to mess with the people responsible for handling financial matters.

OP’s employee helped them get through every audit from various agencies, including a super audit from the IRS about 7 years ago. She was praised by the auditors for being organized, efficient, and pleasant to work with.
