Growing up, OP noticed the disparities in attention and material gifts between him and Melody, causing initial frustration. As maturity set in, understanding dawned – his mother did her best with limited resources. It wasn’t favoritism, but rather a difference in circumstances. This realization allowed him to embrace the love and care showered upon Melody.
Recently, Melody’s fourth birthday was celebrated extravagantly, bringing together family and friends. However, a shocking revelation during the party unearthed painful memories from OP’s childhood. His mother, instead of sharing sweet moments of Melody, recounted a distressing tale of a 7-year-old OP attempting to mend his parents’ fights with spare change.
This hurtful revelation, coupled with the label of “practice kid,” prompted OP to express his anguish to his mother. Disheartened, he distanced himself from the gathering, only to find an unsympathetic response from his mother upon his return home. She dismissed his feelings, labeling him overly sensitive and suggesting therapy, unaware that he was already undergoing therapy.

6. At the get together, OP’s mom decided to share stories about her with others despite it being Melody’s night.
7. And they were all embarrassing stories from OP’s childhood which, clearly, she didn’t want anyone to know.
8. She kept laughing after telling each story and even referred to OP as a “practice kid”.
9. Although extremely hurt, OP tried to brush it all off trying not to ruin Melody’s party for her.
This is so sad. All mothers know which stories of their children to tell others and which ones to keep secret. The stories this mom is sharing with others from OP’s past are those OP didn’t want anyone to know. As she said, it was a painful memory. If OP knows it was a painful memory, her mom is bound to know the same. So this shows, it was all done on purpose. A mom who embarrasses her daughter in front of others is no mom at all.

10. The mom did not stop. She proceeded with the embarrassing stories.
11. And she made sure everyone knew Melody is a better child and that OP was just, as we say it in cricket, a try ball.
12. OP finally decided to confront her mom by sending a text message letting all her feelings out.
13. OP’s mom responded by calling her sensitive for not taking jokes in good spirits, and that she was jealous of Melody.
14. After receiving the text message from her mom, OP’s confidence took a hit as she turned to the AITA community to ask if what she did was right or not.
