Interviewer Insists On Conducting Interview Over Text, Gets Offended By “Unprofessional Response”

Ever gave an interview on a text message? Yes, on TEXT!.

We know many companies conduct face-to-face interviews or through Zoom or Skype but we have never heard of text interviews.

If you own a company that recruits candidates through a text message, then stop right there, and change your method of hiring because you may find a similar candidate like u/CoconutGroove who has shared their weird experience of an interview on text with a hiring manager.

The hiring manager was trying to fill a position and was in process of shortlisting candidates. So, this Reddit user u/CoconutGroove shared their profile and details on an online internet recruitment service where the hiring manager came across this candidate and contacted after seeing their profile. The position was paying $9.95 an hour in Montana, which is a wage that is lower than the minimum wage rate of $10.

When this user was contacted by the manager, they thought to give it a try to see what will happen next. Because they were well aware that they won’t go with this minimum wage.

So, that’s how the interview started.

Well, that’s quite unprofessional from both sides. Like, who conducts an interview on text? How can the interviewer gauge the communication skills and personality through a text message? That’s totally absurd.

Likewise, the interviewee should act professionally as well no matter what method the company chose to fill a position.

When the guy told the interviewer that this method is unprofessional, the interviewer responded that there’s no need for a face-to-face meeting because the position is remote.

That’s when the interviewer realized that they shortlisted the wrong candidate.

That’s crazy! It’s okay if the company conducts a text interview as an initial phase of recruitment. But if the recruiter is having a final interview on text message, then it’s not the correct method to hire for any position. To fill a position needs a complete thorough assessment of skills, personality, and behavior. And all these requirements can’t be assessed through a simple text message.

The guy was also not wrong here. Like, who would like to join a company that is offering a wage that is below minimum wage?

Many organizations are offering their packages below minimum wage and the majority of the employees are working there because of their survival. What else they can do? Nothing! Yes, that’s a sad truth of today’s era and it’s something that we all should strive to change. Exploitation and unprofessional approaches to recruiting employees are never a good thing. All the managers should always learn from their experiences and look for ways they can improve their methods or tactics, and once they find what’s wrong, they should think of alternatives to rectify the situation. It’s also a fact that the person you try to recruit won’t be interested in the opportunity offered just because they either don’t feel comfortable giving interviews on text because they don’t know who you are or if you are credible or not or they simply feel that there are better job opportunities out there who are more professional and offering better wages.
