Unless you have a pet of your own, having moments of intimacy or being close to an animal is not very common for people. You may see cats around your house for a bit, but not a longer period of time that you can observe them and their daily routine. Such special interactions only come rarely, and in Ludwig C. Timm’s case, it happened right outside his bathroom window.
Several months ago, Timm was caught by surprise when he peeked outside his window and noticed a family of squirrels residing there. It was a rare right for him and a rather unexpected one. He could not believe what he was seeing. He saw not one, but a family of squirrels with newborn babies too. They were building a nest on the windowsill.
For any common person, they would find it adorable as Timm did as well. They would feed the squirrels and hope they eventually go away to avoid the mess. But for Timm, what made it even special was that he is a wildlife photographer, so this was even more special for him. He was excited about everything he could capture with his camera while these little animals were resting outside his window.
Ludwig C. Timm recalls, “At first, we only noticed a few small twigs that were lying on the windowsill. We thought the wind had blown it there”. “Then we saw the squirrels building,” He said. It was a rare sight. Never they had imagined they’ll get to see squirrels this up close. Squirrels are seen on trees and they crawl away fast the moment any human gets closer to them. But here they were, right outside his bathroom window.
After seeing them outside his bathroom window, Timm was filled with curiosity about the routine and mannerisms of these tiny creatures. With the advantage of being this close to them, he wanted to dig more into their lives and grasp as much knowledge about them as possible. He wanted to capture moments he deemed special. To avoid missing any special moments, Timm began recording the daily routines of these creatures.
An added factor to this heavenly experience was that the squirrel had newborn babies with her. Timm got to see the transition of newborns to slightly bigger squirrels, although still babies. It was one of the most delightful parts of this whole experience. “It’s a very nice coincidence [that they chose that spot],” he claimed. “We got to see the squirrels grow up.”
Then finally, after filming the squirrels every day, Timm eventually caught something on camera that he had been fondly anticipating. He saw the three squirrels sleeping, cozied up together beneath the twigs. This moment was very special for Timm. They were napping so peacefully, and the physical bond between the mother and her babies was apparent.
He took out his camera and captured the adorable picture above. He was elated at the sight of this moment and the fact that he got to capture it too. “It was very lucky for me to be able to take the picture of the sleeping squirrels,” Timm told blissfully. “Normally they’re inside the nest, but it was hot that day, so they slept where I could see them.”
Any common person would not object to this image, but being a wildlife photographer, Timm was not fully satisfied with this snap. He did not have his actual camera at hand, so he had to take a picture with his phone. He did not want to miss this moment in the hassle of getting a camera. They could be awake any moment. He claimed that because there was a glass in between the camera and the squirrels, the picture is not very clear and a little blurry.
Timm may be critical of the picture, for any other person, this picture is complete just as it is. It is a sight for sour eyes and just seeing these adorable creatures napping together would fill any animal lover with joy.
