Sometimes malicious compliance is the best way to handle abusive customers.
It’s a story we’ve all heard before: a customer comes in looking for a specific item, but it’s not where they expect it to be. They then proceed to take out their frustration on a hapless worker who just happens to be nearby, demanding they “do their job” and find the item for them. But what happens when that worker has had enough of the customer’s entitled attitude and decides to fight back with a little bit of malicious compliance? That’s exactly what happened to one worker, who we’ll call “OP”, when he had an encounter with a particularly aggressive Karen.
OP works in online fulfillment at a large home, garden, and building supply store. His job is to point customers in the right direction or find another associate who works in the department the customer needs. On this particular day, OP was tasked with grabbing a massive order and that’s when Karen appeared, demanding OP’s immediate attention. With a raging harpy voice, Karen demanded that OP help her find what she was looking for. When OP tried to explain that they didn’t work in that department, Karen became actively hostile and insisted that OP help her anyway.
That’s when things took a turn for the worse. Karen suddenly pulled out a screw and nearly stabbed OP in the eye while shoving it toward him. OP was visibly shaken but asked what size screw she needed. Karen, even angrier for some reason, took a step closer and demanded that OP tell her what size she needed. OP told her that he had no clue what size she would need. Karen then threatened to get OP in trouble with their manager but when OP offered to get a manager to help, Karen insisted that OP should “just…do…their…job!” So, OP decided to do just that and walked away to continue looking for the items on his order. Clearly, Karen was unhappy with how the situation had turned out and stormed off. OP, on the other hand, had handled the situation like a pro, using a bit of malicious compliance to show Karen that he was indeed doing this job. And while Karen may not have liked it, OP’s manager certainly did. Scroll down for comments by the Reddit community on this post.
It was satisfying for OP to watch the Karen storming off:
