SIL Gets Mad As Host Puts Strict Limitations On Where Her Service Dog Can Go

Not everyone likes dogs and it is something very natural.

The Reddit story poster in our today’s post is something that doesn’t like dogs. In the past, I have been referring to such people as either dumb, idiot, or the odd ones out. I don’t think these are nice terms to associate with such people. Yes, dogs are the most adopted animals in the world and that does make you believe the dog is the most loved animal in the world. But, being the most loved animal and being loved by every human in the world are two very different things. As I said, there exist people who don’t like dogs and I think we should respect their opinion or decision.  The reason why I say that is we don’t know why they dislike dogs, there could be so many reasons. Maybe they got bit by a dog that threatened their life. There could be a thousand reasons that can make you dislike someone forever.

In today’s story, OP hosts her brother and sister-in-law. They both have a service dog and OP is not too fond of them, in general. She did allow the dog in the house but put a lot of restrictions and limitations on it. So much so that it frustrated their sister-in-law. The rest, you will read OP’s own narration as she posted this story on Reddit asking whether she was an asshole for putting limitations on their SIL’s service dog.

Scroll down below to read what happened!

 1. It is very hard to decide who is on the right side just by reading such a title.

2. We’re gonna have to turn our Sherlock mode on for this one.

3. OP’s SIL is disabled and has a service dog to help her with the problems related to the disability. Something very common.

4. Fair enough, no one can force anyone to like or dislike anything. It’s good that she understand’s her SIL’s need for a service dog even though they personally don’t like dogs.

5. I think these requests are pretty fair for someone who has never had a dog in the house, they would naturally feel grossed after seeing dog mess in the places they mentioned.

6. So basically OP put quite a few limitations on their SIL’s service dog and it will be very interesting to see how she would react to all this.

7. Claire was never going to be happy with all the restrictions on her service dog. But, someone who doesn’t like having dogs in their house, they sound logical with their demands too.

8. This clears up the situation a little. If their own cats are not allowed in or on places that they restricted the dog to be in or on. Then, OP didn’t do anything wrong.

This is a tough one. I won’t lie to you guys. But that edit at the end was very helpful in terms of deciding whether OP was an AH or NTA. If you read the whole story, you would want to side with both parties because one has a dog who they dearly love and wouldn’t like if it wasn’t allowed to move around freely while the other is someone who doesn’t like dogs and doesn’t want it to make a mess in their house. A very tough argument in terms of deciding who is right and who is wrong. But with that edit, we come to know that OP has cats who are also not allowed in the kitchen, the bathroom, or on the sofa. So the rules were not just for that service dog, but for her own animals as well. It is a level playing field hence OP was not the asshole in this case.

The Reddit community voted in and here’s what they had to say:

9. As I said, there is a very thin line between OP being AH or not. This was never going to be an easy decision, not even for the Redditors. But this person is tilted more towards NTA.

10. Again a vote in favor of OP but that doesn’t mean they like OP. It would be hard for their friends to stay their friends if they all adopted dogs in the future.

11. OP wasn’t unreasonable with her rules.

12. NTA because she did allow the dog in the house, it’s just that it wasn’t allowed to do some things. The service dog was never separated from SIL.

13. This person called OP an AH but not a big one. The service dog is supposed to stay with its owner and by limiting the dog from going to the kitchen or the bathroom, they are indirectly restricting their SIL from going to the kitchen or the bathroom as well.

14. This Redditor also thinks OP’s limitations on the service dog were a bit too much.

15. NTA but only if everyone follows those rules till the service dog and its owner leave the house.

16. It was a voluntary visit and they are normally for a few hours. So OP’s limitations were reasonable in such a case, according to this person.

17. A service dog handler decided to break the entire situation down and they sound very reasonable.

18. SIL wasn’t wrong for feeling limitations on her service dog were unfair, but OP wasn’t exactly wrong in their place either.

29. This shows she didn’t want to kill the dog’s ability to be with or help its owner, they just didn’t want it in certain spaces.

20. Close to the line but not over it.
