Woman Asks Reddit AITA For Taking Someone Else’s Cat Home She Thought Was A Stray

Stealing is immoral. But what happens when you don’t know you are stealing?

Ever been in that situation where you find some money laying on the ground and you are stuck in a dilemma that whether it will count as stealing the money or is it okay because you didn’t see anyone drop it. That is exactly the situation I am talking about and we are going to explore it more through a very interesting Reddit story.

The woman who posted the story on Reddit, that we are about to read in a little while, found a cat coming to her house garden quite frequently and kept meowing at her other cats. The woman assumed the cat was a stray and without any further investigation decided to take it in. She had no idea that the cat actually belonged to someone. She just kept the cat as her own even after she was made cognizant that the cat belonged to someone else. She posted the story on the Reddit community’s holy “Am I The Asshole?” subreddit to know whether she was right or wrong for not thoroughly investigating if the cat belonged to someone or not before taking it in.

1. We’ve all been through this dilemma at least once in our life. OP faces it with regards to a cat.

2. So a cat randomly started showing up at their house who seemed pretty friendly but had trust issues.

3. 4 months into the regular meeting, the cat finally started trusting the woman and she took him to the vet for a clean-up as he was converted in fleas and dirt when she let the cat in.

4. Visit to the vet was the right choice as the doctors diagnosed the cat with a lot of infections, worms, and problems. He was definitely not in a good shape.

5. Wow, OP ended up taking on the responsibility to get the cat fixed by all means necessary. He ended up losing an eye but it had to be done for her survival. And all other infections and related issues were dealt with as well.

6. Uh ho, a twist in the tale. The cat actually belongs to someone else and OP had taken it in thinking it was a stray.

7. OP got trashed for “stealing” the cat. Apparently, they had made a post on Instagram (their only social media account) inquiring about the cat but no one responded.

8. The women actually showed up at OP’s house. OP demanded that the woman prove ownership before handing over the cat. After all, they had done a lot for it.

9. What kind of owners don’t pay medical attention to their pets? A very important question.

10. OP had clearly done way too much for the cat to be declared as his true owner. And the cat now literally looks like someone else now after all that treatment.

11. OP was clearly in a dilemma.

12. The condition she found the cat in, the cat had to be put first.

13. The question was posed to the internet to decide whether she was right or wrong.

Let me tell you where I am in this situation. I don’t think OP was an asshole. In fact, the real owner who hadn’t attended to their cat was the AHs. We just read the condition OP had found the cat in. It was full of fleas, and dirt, and had ringworms, eye infections, and all sorts of other worms on its body. The condition was so bad that one of the cat’s eyes had to be operated out. The cat became disabled just to survive and those real owners are to be blamed for it. OP actually helped the cat and did everything that a real owner is supposed to do for their pet. So I don’t think she was wrong to not send the cat back. Who knows what they would have done to the cat had she given it back.

Here’s what the internet had to say on this:

14. The sister was a major AH in this situation as well.

15. OP had all records of what she did for the cat. She is the owner.

16. Exactly what I said, the option at the time was to take that cat in, or else it would’ve died.

17. They were always meant to meet.
