Woman Asks If She Was In The Wrong For Asking A Disabled Person To Switch Seats On A Bus

Entitlement can take many different forms.

Some believe they are deserving of more. Others believe that it is acceptable for a disabled person to move to another seat so they can sit with their daughter. I wish I was making this up, but even writing it out can clearly show someone that they are wrong to do this, and yet people continue to do it. What’s more surprising is that after doing so, she needed to check the Internet to see if she was correct. I suppose I should be thankful that she is finally realising how entitled she was.

I mean, disabled people don’t get many concessions, and one of those few concessions is seats or parking so they don’t have to walk as far or endure pain just to get to their destination. And, while there have been numerous reports of entitled people becoming enraged at others because they do not appear to be disabled, this man was in a wheelchair, so that excuse is definitely out.

Right from the start, the story veers of course pretty quickly.

The first thing I cannot understand is why she didn’t ask anyone else on the bus. There have to be more people on the bus right? So why not ask an able-bodied person so she could sit with her daughter?

She claims that the whole ordeal was very tiring for both of them

Does she think that just because he is in a wheelchair, he wouldn’t have felt tired and thus should have switched seats? Is that why she only asked him and no one else?

However, when she told her friend, she was quick to tell her that her behaviour was wrong.

Isn’t it better to let your child sit in the chair and you stand next to them in that situation? Alternatively, your child can sit on your lap. I don’t understand why she had to ask a disabled person to move just so they wouldn’t get tired. I don’t want to speak for the entire community, and I’m not sure if this is considered ableist, but all I can say is that she acted inappropriately. No one, disabled or not, should be forced to move just so you can sit with your child. And public transportation isn’t all that dangerous, especially since she was always next to her daughter.

It really would have been this simple.

This is entitlement at its finest.

The sarcasm is strong in this one.

As this commenter explains not everyone in a wheelchair is numb from the legs down.

Exactly! It is not as if he had a ton of options to choose from.

We should never expect something from anyone and that is the only way we can lead a fulfilling life.

What are your thoughts on the entire situation? Do you think she was being ableist, as her friend suggested, or do you think it was okay for her to ask this of a disabled person? Did she simply make a mistake, or does she need to be more cautious in the future about how she appears to others? Have you ever been in a situation like this before? If so, which side did you support? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
