Woman Asks If She Was Wrong For Not Giving Her Puppy Away To Become Brother-In-Law’s Service Dog

Bonding with a dog can literally take minutes at times and in some cases when it is not supposed to happen, it just doesn’t. Once you bond with a dog, there is no going back. The idea of giving the dog up just doesn’t come to your mind and even if someone puts it in your mind, you just say no because the love you feel is so powerful that you never consider a reality in which you are without your dog.

In today’s story, we have a Reddit user who got asked to give her puppy up. u/isoC10H12N2O shared that she and her husband decided to get a second dog and hence they adopted a puppy named Scout. The decision was made so that their first dog, Toby, gets to learn how to share mom and dad as the couple was planning to have kids. The couple fell in love with Scout and the puppy too could not live without them.

Fast forward a little and OP gets asked by her SIL to give up Scout so the puppy could be her BIL’s service dog. The BIL required a service dog to help support him but his potential dog failed the required tests. When checked, Scout passed all those tests with flying colors. But OP did not want to give her puppy away and rejected SIL’s request. This resulted in her being called an AH and she took the matter to the community members of the subreddit “Am I The A$$hole?” to know if what she did was right or wrong.

1. OP always wanted to have two dogs.

By getting Scout, they did it because they already had a 2-year-old dog named Toby who was a service dog.

5. The husband argued destiny wants Scout to be BIL’s service dog as he passed all the required tests with flying colors.

6. OP argued that just because BIL’s potential puppy failed the test does not make it a law that they have to give their puppy to him. When MIL gets to know they are not getting the puppy, she starts trashing OP.

OP was NTA. Scout is OP’s dog and she fully gets to decide what is best for her. Some part of me also thinks had OP given Scout away, the puppy must’ve felt betrayed and disappointed in her owner. He did not form an inseparable bond with OP only to be given away to someone else. So that factor must also be considered. I would also like to declare OP’s husband somewhat of an AH for suggesting they should give Scout up. He knew very well why did they adopt the puppy in the first place and how he decided to side with his family. That is not cool.

Here’s what the AITA community members had to say and why:

7. BIL’s parents should’ve done better to help him.

8. MIL had a lot of time to prepare for this day and she didn’t put in the required effort for her son. OP is not at all to be blamed.

9. OP getting Scout and BIL’s potential service dog failing the tests at the same time was just a coincidence.

Dog tax.

“This puppy was abandoned on backroads with a zip tie tightened around his jaw. Look how happy he is at his new forever home.”
