Have you ever seen your pet do a sploot?
If you have, that’s great! If you haven’t, then don’t worry, you will soon. Meanwhile, allow us to break it down to you in simple terms what exactly does sploot mean. Sploot is basically an adorable stretch that most cats and dogs do. In this type of stretch, cats and dogs, lay flat on their belly and stretch their legs out behind them. So, the next time you see either a cat or a dog in this adorable position, just know that they are performing the legendary art of sploot. Sploots are mainly common among Corgis. However, a lot of cats and dogs do it too.
Now, a question arises. Why do our pets sploot? Well, there are a number of reasons. Stretching their bodies to get the blood flowing is probably the foremost reason. Almost all creatures need a good stretch from time to time to stay healthy. So, they’re probably doing that and we just find it insanely cute. Another reason is to keep their bodies from overheating. As they lie flat on their belly, the cold ground helps in regulating body temperature. Other than this, sploots are a great way of exercising. According to Healthy Pets, they strengthen hip flexors allowing them to be more flexible.
Now, that you know what sploots are, how about we take a look at some? Below, we have compiled photos of some of the cutest and funniest cats doing a sploot.

Though generally, all sploots are like that. Sometimes, there are a few variations as well. For instance:
- The Half Sploot— Is when only one leg is sticking out.
- The Side Sploot— Is when they don’t stretch out their legs. Instead, lean them to one side.
- The Full Sploot—Is when both hind legs are stretched out and spread behind the cat.
Sometimes, there’s another reason for these sploots. It’s rare, but it’s a sign of an underlying problem. If you ever find your cat hopping on its front legs like a bunny, chances are your cat is suffering from hip dysplasia. If you ever see your cat doing that, it’s not a sploot but a sign of a medical problem. So, always make sure your cats are doing it right!
