In this story, a single parent is struggling with the aftermath of a decision to cut financial support for their eldest child, who recently graduated with a degree in a field the parent strongly disapproves of. Despite passionate disagreements during the child’s education, they pursued their chosen career, securing a job that pays moderately but has limited growth potential in the local job market.
As the parent enforces the stipulation of financial independence after a year of post-graduation support, tensions escalate when the child realizes the extent of their financial responsibilities. The parent, unyielding in their resolve, refuses to renew the financial support, insisting that the child navigate the challenges of adult life independently. The child, facing the prospect of relocating to a more affordable area or finding additional employment, confronts the harsh reality of balancing passion and financial stability. Desperate to maintain their current lifestyle, the child seeks support from extended family members, creating a rift within the family as opinions on the parent’s decision diverge.

3. OP also bought them a car as a graduation gift and has been paying for their insurance moreover, OP also paid for their apartment rent which is $5000 a month, and now their lease is coming but OP has remained them it’s been a year and now they are on their own.
4. OP and his kid got into heated discussions because they said they couldn’t afford to live in the city while working at their job but OP had already warned them about it
5. OP said they would be responsible for paying their way from now on which includes family reunion vacation next summer but they argued and said they could not afford it
6. Now OP wants to know whether he’s being too strict, let’s find out.
7. Yes maybe OP should pay for the family vacation
8. NTA
9. Reality is adulting is not a piece of cake; maturity is when you understand it!
10. What are your thoughts on this?
11. I agree with this!
12. The fact that OP already told them all of these conditions and terms but the fact they are denying it makes them an A-hole, not OP
13. Maybe he will support everyone
14. Exactly, maybe it is a bit harsh but the rest is adulting and he needs to figure it out.
15. They should look for affordable accommodations rather than making a big deal out of it
16. OP would have been an A-hole if he hadn’t made them aware of the conditions but he already did that so NTA
17. The gestures shown by OP were generous a lot of parents don’t even give a damn about what their kids do
