Every home has its own set of standards that guests are expected to abide by. You cannot disrespect someone’s personal space by acting in a way that you happen to believe is acceptable when you enter their home. Any other conduct is simply improper and impolite.
Diverse regions of the world have different attitudes toward pets; in some, it’s regarded as usual to keep pets outside the home, particularly farm animals. When you are accustomed to that, seeing a dog indoors will instantly set off a trigger because you are not used to that. Reddit user u/Comfortable-Ad7073 wrote a post on the r/AmItheA**hole subreddit about how he expelled his girlfriend’s parents from his house after finding out that they had tied his dog. Comfortable-Ad7073 decided to ask the Reddit community for their views because he wasn’t sure if what he did was appropriate. The Reddit community responded to the post with a wide variety of opinions. OP’s girlfriend has never had an “indoor” dog like Boots

He noticed one morning that boot was nowhere to be seen.

Why even tie him up in the first place?

They did not respect OP’s house rules.

Mistreating your dog is crossing the line.

They wanted to “prove a point” by tying him up.

“The homeless audacious family”

What they did is disrespectful.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

OP’s reaction hopefully taught them some respect.

People think they can come in and just change stuff.

Your home, your dog, your rules.

“Large dogs who patrol the property are treated just like the other farm animals”

Dogs are family members and should be treated accordingly.

They failed to meet the minimum.

What they did is even illegal in some states.

It’s his home and they are guests.

What they did is borderline abuse.

OP’s GF is an a-hole for allowing it to happen.

The GF’s family mistreated the OP by tying up his dog and disobeying his house rules. Since they mistreated one of his family members and didn’t respect him, he had the right to eject them from his house.
The family went too far by tying Boots; OP is most definitely not the a-hole in this situation. They could have just led him outside and let him sit there, but they made sure to restrict his movement and restrain him.
It’s completely unacceptable, and they ought to at least have expressed regret.
