Newly Hired Tells Trainer He Makes More Money, Office Drama About Wage Inequality Ensues

Some topics are better left undiscussed or else this happens.

As a corporate employee, you should be aware of the fact that not every single topic in the world is open for discussion. The workplace dynamics have taught us that it is better to stay quiet about some things. There are some very general things that are mentioned in an organization’s code of conduct, for example, no open discussions on politics, religion, ethnicities, and so on. And there are things that are not mentioned in the code but the worker should be intelligent enough to know what’s the right time to discuss what and what is not. Oh, and yeah, one more thing that the organizations discourage is telling others how much they pay you. Some organizations legally bind you to a contract stating that you cannot quote the exact figures of your salary to anyone. But in modern times, people have started to become more open about how much they make compared to the old times when a conversation of such kind was considered taboo.

One Reddit user engaged in such a conversation at the office. They were recently hired at a company and got indulged in a conversation with their trainer. The trainer had immense expertise and skill in the job and they happened to touch the topic of salaries which resulted in OP telling that they are being paid $28/hour which turned out to be way more than what the organization was given to the trainer. Based on the experience differential, the trainer felt this was unfair and they had a very intense conversation on unfair salaries.

1. Just by that title, you already know this is going to be a very interesting story, full of spices.

2. So they randomly indulged into a conversation about wages which lost weight but then caught it back again as trainer asked why was OP interested in what they were making.

3. So OP shared that he asks about other people’s wages because he wants to know if his is fair and hence he shared his salary with the traner. Which I am guessing will not be received too well.

4. Uh ho, OP clearly was hired at a wage way too higher than the one they gave to the trainer and it shows from their tone change.

5. I don’t think it is the new hire’s fault that they make more money than the trainer, if they are to question anyone or show their anger to anyone, it is the top management.

6. Highly unfortunate but again, not OP’s fault.

7. So it seems that the trainer finally got over the news and was back into normal mood again.

8. OP encouraged the Reddit community to have such conversations with coworkers so everyone can know if they are playing at a level field or at an unfair one.

9. Oof…

I believe this was an amazing job OP did by touching on this topic about salaries. This way the trainer got to realize they were being underpaid and actually did something about it, else he would’ve just been unfairly paid for doing something worth a lot more.

10. So it takes ripping them a new one to get a pay raise, got it.

11. OP raised a nice point and it was received very well by the community.
