Saying no and doing what you feel like is not a wrong thing to do. In fact, it is a form of self love. It shows that you value yourself and have priorities. Other people who can’t take no for an answer and get offended if someone tells them no have serious issues with themselves. Their reaction to a no tells us everything about themselves. After getting a no they try to make you change your mind and do as they ask you to do. These people try to put you in a situation where you start to question your own sanity. It is better to immediately take steps and distance yourself from such people, before they take away the most precious thing you have, that is your mental peace.
Diet control and weight loss are a rather private maters. Constantly telling someone that they’re fat and should lose some weight is extremely unethical. You don’t know what the other person is going through and what are their struggles. Some people have certain medical conditions that cause them to gain weight and obviously, they know it. They just don’t feel like sharing their personal medical details with the world. So, forcing them to join in on a diet and lose weight is wrong. It doesn’t only hurt a lot of feelings, but it also causes them to worry more about their body image and appearance. Something like that happened with a man who was a recovering anorexic. He shared his story on Reddit in the subreddit “Am I the a*shole”. A group of his co-workers decides to start a diet to lose weight by thanksgiving due to the Covid weight gain. They tried to force him into joining them even after the man said no. Scroll down to read what happened exactly.
So here’s what happened.
OP is one of the 7 people not participating.
OP’s co-workers try to convince him.
OP finally says no and co-workers try to make him feel bad.
OP tells them the real reason why he doesn’t want to join them.
So the co-workers think they were just joking.
HR and some co-workers come to OP’s support.
The whole diet bet thing got canceled and toxic co-workers blame it all on OP.
Some lady co-workers were offended.
The OP did what he had to do and he did the right thing. NO one can force you to do anything against your will. No one has the right to make you feel bad for not doing as they were forcing you to do. It is just all together wrong. We all have the freedom of speech and there is nothing wrong about telling people no. From the OP’s story we can tell that he is surrounded by toxic people at work. Working with toxic people is extremely difficult. The are top class manipulators and gas lighters. The OP did the right thing. If someone says no, it means no. They said it for a reason and there is no point in forcing them to change their mind. We are immensely happy to know how the HR handled the whole situation and how some of his co-workers came to his support. The diet bet people had completely lost their minds. Redditors also shared their views about this story and here’s what they said. Scroll down to read the comments.
Well done HR team.
They’re gaslighters.
Harassers feeling harassed.
That’s a nice idea.
Yes, that is very important.
Op made the right move at the right time. It is always best to take a stand for yourself and distance yourself from anything that is disturbing your mental peace. Your own well being should be your first priority. What do you guys think about this? What would your guys do if you were in a similar situation as the OP?
