Consider being refused a promotion because you are perceived as unqualified for your current position. When work is unfair, overworked employees may strike back by literally doing their job description. When people put in the effort, they can become lords of efficiency, preferring to work smarter rather than harder. Sometimes companies and management act so strange and weird and they don’t even realize that their employees are the backbone of every business or business organization. We can’t make them feel wrong for what they did unless they are in that position. Unless the supervisor would have been in the OP’s place. OP and his colleagues were doing double work including issuing fine who break the laws but they still weren’t getting any promotion even though they were doing a lot of work. This is what malicious compliance is.

People need to understand that others are just trying to make their living out of a job and unless the environment where the work wouldn’t be safe they won’t be able to give their best to the job.
