Couple Pretended To Be Broke Just So Their Family Doesn’t Bother Them

Although we say money can’t buy happiness, and I do believe in some of that but you cannot disregard the importance of money with that statement. It is an important entity, as I like to call it, and there is no survival without it. The important part here is that you have to have the money in your own name to actually benefit from it. One can get unlimited money by taking on debt but that money isn’t in your name, you have to repay it back, and at times people d*e but fail to repay their debt obligations.

Today’s story revolves around the topic of money. This Redditor took it to the famous subreddit “Am I The A$$hole?” to share that when he and his wife retired, they had 4 million dollars in savings. I would call that a successful retirement. OP made it very clear to his wife not to share with his side of the family that they are rich. It is because he knew they would keep asking for money if they got to know about it. OP shared his father and brother worked in oil and gas but didn’t save a single buck. Their way of spending resulted in them incurring so much debt that his father still works in his 70s.

When OP’s parents got to know the reality about his wealth, they got really angry at him and that is why the matter was taken to the AITA community by OP to know if hiding the truth about him being rich from his parents was the right thing to do or not.

5. Can you imagine people working in oil and gas and not making anything at all…Instead, these people ended up taking on debt.

6. That is a terrible scenario to be in.

7. Those people cannot retire because there is so much debt they have yet to settle.

8. Recently, OP’s parents found out about his and his wife’s retirement and their wealth from their grandson. They didn’t like it at all.

So? What is wrong with that? OP knew very well if his family got to know about the amount of money he had, they would 100% want him to scare off all their debt. And it is not easy to say no to your parents. It was a good strategy to not let them know from the very beginning but the truth was always going to come out at some point.

OP should stand his ground. If his wife’s family has never asked for money then what is wrong with OP’s family? These guys worked in oil and gas. If OP saved millions, his family should have saved billions.

Here’s what the AITA community had to say about this:

13. You shouldn’t have hidden it from your parents. You should have told them the truth from the get-go and should have made it clear that you worked hard for the money so they won’t be getting any of it.

14. The millions would finish within months if you started giving them money.
