In this story, OP was assigned to sentry duty at the front gate of a military base. Their duty was to check the IDs of vehicles and salute commissioned officers who were identified by special stickers on their windshields. One day, a car with an officer’s sticker approached, but instead of the officer, it was the officer’s wife driving the car.
The officer’s wife, Karen, demanded a salute from OP, mistakenly believing that the officer’s sticker entitled her to receive salutes. OP politely explained that salutes are only rendered to commissioned officers and not to family members. However, Karen insisted that the sticker should be sufficient to receive a salute.
Later that day, the base issued a new mandate requiring all enlisted personnel to salute vehicle stickers of officers, regardless of who was in the vehicle. This order was likely issued in response to Karen’s complaint. In a case of malicious compliance, OP and other enlisted personnel began saluting vehicle stickers, even if the cars were unoccupied. They took it to an extreme by prioritizing sticker salutes over saluting actual officers, leading to humorous situations of saluting empty cars as they walked through parking lots.
The practice of saluting vehicle stickers continued to spread as more people observed and imitated OP’s behavior, however, due to the absurdity of saluting empty cars and the lack of clarity on how to salute a car in the officer’s pecking order.

5. OP replied to her that salutes are only rendered to commissioned officers, but she insisted that I have a sticker and you need to salute the sticker. To which OP replied ” I’m afraid that sticker is not an officer either”.
6. The lady frustratedly pulled through and left the post and she pulled right into the administrative building, and OP knew where this all was going.
7. Later that day they got an official mandate that from here forward they will salute vehicle stickers of officers regardless of who’s in the vehicle.

9. Right after that order, OP and all the soldiers started saluting stickers. Moreover, OP started saluting empty cars and more the people watched him doing this. They all started doing it.
