30 Secrets Hidden By Parents From Their Children That Should Stay A Secret

Ignorance is bliss.

We have all heard this saying but do we really understand what sort of context it applies to? I thought I did but I think the following stories will change your mind. I mean, everyone keeps secrets. That is just the way of life. We can go around saying that honesty is the best policy and teach our kids to never lie but that is just not the way the world works. Sometimes you have to lie to protect someone or their feelings.

This may sound weird to people who see the world in black and white and think there is no in-between but the world is just different shades of grey when it comes to the morality of lying and telling the truth. And this sentiment applies to parents as well. We as kids hope that our parents always tell us the truth but sometimes the truth can do more harm than good and that is perfectly encapsulated in some of these stories. So just scroll below to read some shocking stories.

Trigger Warning: Some of these stories talk about topics that you may not be comfortable with. You have been warned.

#1 Giving away.

It’s about my sister but when she was a baby my mother tried to give her away because she didn’t want her. My dad found out and got her back from the woman. She is 21 and still doesn’t know.

#2 Slip of the tongue.

One time a friend’s mom let it slip in front of us kids that she took him to the doctor a few times because his penis was so small. We never forgot that. Ever. He ended up with some anger issues later on.

#3 Horrible parents.

My adopted kids came from a couple of meth addicts. Even though they all remember their birth mom and dad fondly, they have no idea how horrible they really were and how much they put the kids lives in danger and I’m not sure if I can ever tell them that.

#4 Secrets.

I have the opposite problem. When I was a child my mom started to tell me a story about me that apparently had something to do with right after I was born, but my dad stopped her and said, “He doesn’t need to know about that.”

Last I’ve ever heard of it. The eerie feeling you’d imagine hasn’t quite worn off, and this was 30 years ago.

#5 Half Brother.

I recently found out I have a half-brother and both my parents don’t know I’m aware of it.

#6 Kitten.

My fiancée’s daughter (6 years old) hugged a kitten to death when she was 2. We’ll not be telling her about that for a very very long time.

#7 Gymnastics.

My son shat in his own mouth at about 6 months old. Don’t ask me how. He also got some in his ears.

#8 Sharing custody.

Something I will probably never tell my daughter: her father wanted me to abort her. I almost did. I changed my mind a few minutes before the procedure. Her dad didn’t want anything to do with her for the first few years of her life. Now, he and I share custody and he’s a great dad.

But if she ever found out that her father didn’t want her and that’s why he wasn’t around in the beginning, it would devastate her. So, it’s something her father and I promised to keep to ourselves.

#9 Belinda.

My mum always used to tell me when I was a kid that I had an older sister called Belinda, and that she was a very naughty girl, and Belinda had to be adopted out to a boarding school because she was that naughty. I believed it for years, and mum didn’t tell me the truth until I discovered MySpace and tried to find her online…

#10 A twin.

2 things…my daughter had an identical twin who didn’t survive, and the man she knows as her father is not her father.

I was in an abusive relationship and the biological father decided he would rather us both be dead if I didn’t want to be with him so he started driving into oncoming traffic. I reacted by fleeing the vehicle at 45 mph because I saw a cop car parked a block away. I opened the door and grabbed my knees and tucked my head and rolled out and ended up really bruised and sore and killed one of the babies. But I made it the police and never saw him again.

#11 Football star.

My teenage football star son will occasionally put on my wife’s dresses and hang around the house. He acts like he is being funny but he does it for hours. We noticed recently that he also does it sometimes when no one is home (dresses re-arranged, not put on hangers perfectly). So he’s a masculine, studly, cross-dressing my football star in HS. This would destroy him if it got out. We think it’s OK and are happy to let him explore.

#12 Drunk mother.

My brother was born with the umbilical cord choking him, and was 1-2 seconds away from having serious brain damage.

My mom attributes that to why he’s such a weirdo and a total fuck up (I’m a normal dude). She told me this drunkenly and swore me to secrecy.

#13 Old memories.

I found out that when I was six years old I was s**ually a**aulted. I have zero recollection of this, and my parents don’t know that I know.

#14 Brother and sister.

I’m fairly sure my son and daughter are having s*x with each other. I’ve been suspicious for a while, and I lately told my wife about my suspicions, she told me that she also suspects they’re in a relationship.

#15 Crying.

A little different of a story, but relevant. When I was around 12 my mum was quite drunk one night and I asked her to tell me a story. I didn’t expect her to come right out and say “I was pregnant before you were born, but I got an abortion. I regret that, you missed out on an older sister or brother.” She then proceeded to start drunkenly crying. That affected me a little more than I let show.

Some of these secrets are clearly more horrifying than others. It is also clear that most of these parents are just trying their best so as to not scar their children for life. This is especially true in cases where the adoptive parent does not want their kid to find out about their biological parents for whatever reason. And usually those reasons are quite logical.

#16 Tail.

My husband and I have told our daughter that she was born with a tail. If you ask her what happened to it, she’ll say “We had to cut it off when I was born because it wouldn’t fit in my pants.” She honestly believes us, which might make us terrible parents, but I think it’s pretty hilarious.

We will tell her that she wasn’t actually born with a tail before she starts school. Other than that, 4-year-olds don’t have many secrets.

#17 Married twice.

Smoking with my Uncle revealed to me that my dad was married before my mom and that I saw the woman almost every day. I still don’t know who it is, but I now have mini breakdowns because it could literally be anyone.

#18 Jail.

An ex-girlfriend was ab*sed by a neighbor (female). The neighbor also s**ually ab*sed her own son, making my ex and him do things to each other. My ex was about two at the time.

The neighbor was caught and went to jail. Her parents kept it a secret from her, hoping she was too young to remember. She exhibited all the signs of trauma but had no memory of the actual incident. Since her emotional problems were evident, they decided to disclose the truth and work from there. She didn’t find out until she was 16 though.

#19 Old truck.

My friend bought his dad’s old truck from his grandma for $500. When he got home his mom said, “oh hey that’s the truck you were conceived in!”. Didn’t ruin his life but he no longer owns a truck.

#20 Side hustle.

My mom recently found out about my side job doing gay p*rn. Awkkk.

#21 Gender mistakes.

When my son was born, he was thought to be a girl due to having an extremely small penis. He’s now 14 and it would definitely have an effect on his life if I let the words slip.

#22 Too much to handle.

I had a friend who was adopted. When she was about 15 her adoptive parents let her know why she was adopted.

It was because when she was still an infant her father killed her mother then proceeded to take his own life.

I’m positive that because of this she ultimately committed suicide by jumping in front of a train a couple months later.

#23 Biological daughter.

My daughter is not my biological daughter. She is currently only 2yo, so the time has not come to tell her yet. I dread it as I consider her to be my child and I love her with all of my heart.

#24 In the end.

My parents waited until I was 20 to tell me that my grandpa molested me when I was 4 years old. I’m adopted and my mom suspects he felt like it was ok since I wasn’t “family.” They only told me because he was about to die. He couldn’t talk but I confronted him about it. You could see from the sadness in his eyes it was true. I never received an apology. I am now almost 30.

#25 Hamster.

Not sure if it would ruin her, but I once killed my daughter’s hamster…she was at her grandma’s house overnight and I decided to air out her room while she was gone. I opened her window, but forgot to close it, unfortunately, this was during a Canadian winter…I replaced the hamster just in time, she never noticed, but I still feel bad about it years later.

#26 Username.

I know my son’s Reddit username.

#27 The lie.

My real dad is a pedophile so I’m going to tell my 8-month-old son when he’s older that he died when I was 4. My siblings will tell their kids the same thing.

#28 Teddy Bear.

Well I know my 23-year-old brother still sleeps with his Paddington teddy bear he got upon birth. It looks like a shriveled piece of foreskin by now.

#29 The harsh truth.

My mum told me I was an accident. And I don’t mean the normal way you tell a child. She told me that she used contraception (a condom that split), she took the morning after pill, and when that didn’t work she booked an appointment at the abortion clinic! The only reason she kept me was because she told my grandma who got overly excited and talked her into it.

I know that sounds a harsh thing to tell a child (she told me when I was about 14), but it never traumatized me because she always told me it was the best decision she ever made, and that I was determined to live. But whenever I tell anyone that she said that to me I always get the look of pure shock spread across their face!

#30 Balloon.

Not a parent but one story I know my parents have on me is about when I was 2-3-years-old I went to the playground and found the bottom of a balloon. You know the part you blow in. Anyway I took said rubber circle and hid at the top of the play set and opened my pants and slipped it over the tip of my penis. Hours later I said daddy my thingy hurts to which he replied let’s go in my room and check it out. My pants were removed and he saw the end of a balloon on his son’s penis and immediately cut it off.

The balloon NOT the penis thank god! Anyway my parents have vowed to never tell this story to anyone except the person I decide to spend the rest of my life with. I am 20.

What are your thoughts on these dark secrets? Do you have any secrets that you have never told your kids? If so why not share them with us? After all, there is absolutely no chance that your kids will be able to find your username or your comment on the Internet.
