Boss Expects Female Employee To Work 24/7 Like Her Male Colleagues, Receives A Reality Check

If you have a terrible boss, trust me, you are not alone.

You must consider yourself a very lucky person if you have a boss who is not inconsiderate. The pandemic has changed the lives of people to a drastic extent. The recent increase in the work from home culture is one of the major transformations that we have seen during the pandemic. According to a survey, it has been revealed that about 42% of the US labor force is working from home full time as compared to the 26% who still have to work on their business premises. A majority of the countries can be seen being dominated by the WFH economy which includes the US as well. However, workers find themselves being pressured by the toxic workplace dynamics.

Why? Because there’s a fine line between a personal and a professional life that is being breached. Many workers are facing the consequences of it already. A lawyer and a writer who goes by the name of Karan Tripathi, shared a story on his Twitter handle about how his sister’s boss told her to work 24/7 like her male colleagues. Karan added that “Offices are becoming ignorant towards the disproportionate burden of WFH on women,” and we completely agree with it. The thread sparked a debate regarding the dynamics of a toxic boss and the flaws of the WFH culture. Let’s go ahead and read the entire experiences of people.

According to a survey that has was conducted by Stanford economist Nichlos Bloom, about 8% of all the employees that are currently working from home at least a day a week in 2018 are going to increase drastically in a post-pandemic world. He said, “I suspect almost all employees who can work from home—which is estimated at about 40 percent of employees—will be allowed to work from home at least one day a week.”

According to Nicholas, there are 3 main reasons behind it. The first is the fear of crowds. Secondly, the investments in telecommuting technology have paid off and by now, we have plenty of WFH experience. Third, the stigma has ended and now we know how to handle things from home more effectively now.

Karan has pointed out the flaws in the WFH culture and we completely agree with it!

While there are many advantages of WFH culture, it has its bad sides too. I mean, many people, all over the world, don’t have proper facilities to work from their homes. Some people don’t have their own private space, a computer, or even the internet to work from home. According to Nicholas, people who can actually work from home in only half of all the US labor force. “Only 51 percent of the survey respondents—mostly managers, professionals, and financial workers who can carry out their jobs on computers—reported being able to work from home at an efficiency rate of 80 percent or more.”

Meanwhile, the workers of retail, healthcare, transport, and business service have no such option since they “need to see customers or work with products or equipment. As a result, these things are generating a time bomb for inequality,” Bloom warns. “Our results show that more educated, higher-earning employees are far more likely to work from home—so they are continuing to get paid, develop their skills, and advance their careers.”

Now the thing is, the WFH culture is not only toxic for women only. It has been equally toxic for men too! We don’t know about your experiences but the thread sparked a huge outrage amongst the Twitter community and people started to share their stories. Let’s go ahead and read about their experiences of working from home.

After reading these experiences, we have reached the conclusion that the WFH culture is equally toxic for both genders. There are some amendments that need to be carried out in order to diminish the toxicity that people are having to face. On the other hand, bosses need to be more considerate about their employees and stop being a-holes. The pandemic has affected the lives of every individual equally and we must work collectively to minimize these effects.
