Being bilingual has many advantages.
Knowing more than one language can be extremely enjoyable because you can not only communicate with a wider range of people, but you can also curse someone in front of them without them realising it. Furthermore, being bilingual opens up a whole new world of communication possibilities, including the ability to have secret conversations in front of others. The ability to switch languages seamlessly can be both enjoyable and empowering, giving you a distinct advantage in social situations.
While I can’t say I’ve never spoken negatively about someone in front of them in another language, it’s only happened once or twice, and it was always because they were being inappropriate. However, doing it to people who consider you to be family or friends is just plain rude. Although the original poster (OP) of the following story dealt with exactly that, he was unaware of it. He was in a relationship with someone who was Portuguese, and unbeknownst to him, her family was constantly making fun of him in Portuguese.

OP had been going with his girlfriend until he discovered what her parents were saying about him.
OP hit it off right away with this woman, and he has tried his hardest to be involved with his family, which is Portuguese.
OP thought her family was incredibly welcoming and nice, even when they talked in another language in front of him.
This is why OP decided to surprise them and started learning Portuguese to better connect with them.
This ended with him being the one surprised, as he realised his girlfriend’s family was badmouthing him in their native language.

OP wasn’t sure how to deal with this situation, and his trust in his girlfriend was broken completely.
That is why he ended up on Reddit, asking for advice from strangers on the Internet as to how he should address this issue.

Thankfully, the story didn’t end there, as we got an update on what he ended up doing.
He laughed along as they made fun of him and then asked them to pass the salad in Portuguese, and this shut everyone up.
On the drive back, OP also broke up with his girlfriend, which was clearly the right move considering the circumstances.
This was obviously hard on OP, but I hope he feels better soon.
We didn’t get any more updates, but we can only hope that he is doing better now and finds someone worthy of him in the future.

I honestly feel bad for the OP. He clearly respects his girlfriend’s family and has even attempted to learn another language in order to communicate more effectively with them. As someone who speaks more than one language, I usually stick to the language that everyone in the gathering is familiar with so that they do not feel excluded, but there is nothing wrong with speaking in a language you are comfortable with as long as you are not excluding anyone. I’m glad OP left his girlfriend because it would have created problems in the future.
This was the perfect way to call them out.
OP didn’t do anything wrong.
Did they really think this was okay behaviour?
It will take time, but eventually, he will feel good about his decision.
It was the only way to deal with this situation.

OP’s ex also didn’t stop her family, so she was just as responsible.
She doesn’t deserve a kind word from him.
Hopefully, he has better things in his future.
