Bringing back a lost pet to its family feels amazing. It’s even better if there’s a reward involved. However, sometimes people make promises they don’t intend to keep just to get what they want.
Imagine a family offering a $500 reward for finding their lost cat. When someone showed up at their door with the cat in hand, they were overjoyed. But their happiness didn’t last long. They soon realized that the person only wanted the reward money they promised. The man who returned the cat felt let down by this experience. Reddit user u/kcmocats turned to the “Am I The A$$hole?” community to get their opinion on his actions.

1. If there was a reward then no.
2. While OP and his wife were walking for lunch one day, they noticed some reward posters for a missing cat.
3. The couple casually talked about the lost cat while on their way.
4. And suddenly they saw a cat on the roof of a car that looked exactly like the one they saw on the reward poster
5. OP took a picture of the cat and the two decided to walk back to the reward poster to compare. It was, indeed, the same cat.
6. The couple went back to the cat and OP picked it up. The cat didn’t show any resistance, however it did look very scared.
7. Luckily, the owners of the cat lived only four blocks away so the couple went straight to their house.
8. As the couple got near, the kids in the house noticed their cat and ran out screaming in happiness. The parents followed.
9. The family was really happy to finally have the cat back. As they were walking back inside, OP brought up the topic of the $500 reward that was set for whoever found the cat.
10. THe mom and dad sounded like they had no idea what OP was talking about.
The family put that poster up, that is for sure. That is because they didn’t question how OP got their number when he called regarding the cat. They put up the poster which means they wrote the content of it as well. End result? They put up that $500 reward for anyone who found the cat. OP found it and was fully entitled to that reward. He must not leave without getting the money.

11. The dad went inside and brought back $320 saying that’s all he had in cash and that he could arrange more if it was really that important. OP said no and took the money.
12. While walking back, both Mom and Dad kept cursing OP and his wife for taking the money.
13. OP’s wife supported him. There was a reward for finding the missing cat. OP found it and was fully entitled to it.
14. When OP shared the story with his friends, half of them sided with him while the other half called him an AH.
15. Their parents also said OP should’ve just given them the cat without asking for any money. The matter was taken to the courts of the AITA community.
