Confused Redditor Wants To Surrender His Old Roommate’s Dog That They Dumped On Him

Surrendering a dog is not as easy as it seems.

Many people realize the responsibility of adopting a dog is not their cup of tea and when this happens after they have adopted one, one good option is to contact an animal rescue organization or a shelter near you to send your pet there. But surrendering an animal is not as easy as it sounds. Many organizations don’t take walk-ins, they require a whole process that must be followed while those who do accept may not be able to take your pet in because they don’t have any space. There’s also a fee that you may have to pay at the time of surrendering. And know this, once you surrender that dog your control over it is finished. You are in no position, then, to decide what happens with that dog, and who adopts it. At times, dogs don’t adapt to the environment of an animal shelter and that makes them feel anxious and, at times, aggressive. Such behavioral traits are not liked by people seeking to adopt a dog. All of this information is important to know for the person who is planning to give up their dog.

The practice many dog professionals also suggest is to find a new home for the dog yourself instead of having the shelters do it. That way you will be assured your dog is in good hands because you select the family that adopts it and the sense of comfort will ease you up a bit too. No one likes uncertainties!

In today’s story Reddit user u/nrc1220 shared how they were planning to surrender a dog that got dumped on them by their old roommate. They felt trapped and desperately wanted to do something about it.

Scroll down below to read how it all went.

1. Let’s read why he wanted to surrender the dog and what choice he has.

2. OP’s roommate had a dog that became OP’s responsibility after the roommate left owing to a relationship they got into.

3. At the end of their lease when OP was also going to change states, he asked his roommate to take his dog but the roommate refused.

4. OP had no option but to bring the dog with him but it was really difficult to find places to live that accepted such dogs.

5. The dog basically got dumped on OP and not attending to it makes him feel guilty. It is a tricky situation.

6. They have been kicking it for over 2 years now and OP doesn’t know how will things proceed onwards.

OP’s old roommate was such an AH for doing what he did. He literally abandoned his dog to move in with a girl. My guy, you just made the biggest mistake of your life because dogs don’t break up but women do. And when that roommate has a breakup, and I hope he does have one at the earliest, there won’t be any dog to help him cope with all the pain. Peace out, sucker! As far as OP is concerned, it was kind of him to take on the responsibility of the dog even though no law bound him to do so. But as we read, things are now getting a bit out of hand for OP and he feels trapped under the responsibility more than an owner to the dog. I would personally suggest he post an adoption ad. He is taking care of the animal, letting it happen, and keeping the ad running on the side. Maybe, a family will call him and they might be more than happy to adopt the dog.

11. The dog may end up falling in love with OP and rehoming him after that happens would be unfair.

12. OP should look for no-kill shelters and send the dog to one that has space.
