Single Dad Wants A Child Free Weekend

Parenting is a huge responsibility. There are so many challenges that come with it that will literally squeeze the life out of trying to overcome them, all while keeping your baby happy, and healthy, and making sure it is being brought up correctly. Seriously, I commend all parents for taking on this massive responsibility. The burden of parenting gets divided among both parents with one mostly looking after the child and the other making sure they have enough financing for a healthy and bright future for the baby. But when the parent is single, which means they have either taken divorce or have separated, then the toughness of the whole process comes on a single person making parenting twice as hard.

In today’s story, we have Reddit user u/Proper-Monitor-8651 who took separation from his wife. He has a 10-year-old daughter with her and after winning the court case, he got full custody of his little girl. Their daughter is allowed to visit her mother for one week every month.

OP shared that because he spent so much time and effort in getting custody of his daughter, he wanted a child-free weekend to relax and regain his physical and mental capabilities to begin his journey as a single parent. But his daughter did not want to go to her mom’s house saying that she doesn’t cook good food and that she doesn’t want to share a room. OP told his daughter she would have to go which made her cry. This resulted in OP being called an AH by his own mom so he decided to share the story on the infamous subreddit “Am I The A$$hole?” to know if wanting a child-free weekend made him an AH or not.

OP is NTA. I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to spend a week away from everyone to relax and regain your mental capacity to continue on with life. The fact that OP is voluntarily willing to send his daughter to his ex-wife’s house shows that he feels secure in his heart sending her there. He trusts his ex-wife that she will not harm the kid and will take great care of her.

Parenting is tough. OP will be taking care of his daughter 3 weeks out of the maximum 4. He knows he is going to take on a major duty and a little rest before diving into it won’t hurt anyone.

The views of the AITA community were divided. While some did not support OP wanting to take a weekend away from his daughter, others felt he deserved it:

6. The kid won’t cry for no reason. There is certainly something her mom does that she doesn’t like. OP should keep his daughter.

7. OP is prioritizing his needs over his daughter’s which makes him an AH.

The dynamic then began to shift. People shared their views on why OP was not the AH.

8. The daughter is not at the age to pick a full-time parent. For now, she must operate as per the court-ordered time.

9. If OP has agreed to visitations, surely he has evaluated that the mom’s house is safe and secure for his daughter.

10. The ruling has to be abided by.
