Courtesy is contagious. You must have heard about this statement many times but today we are going to show it to you in action with a real-life example. Reddit user u/RosiePosey101 shared that people living in her neighborhood had a very good relationship with each other. So much so that they would do cookouts to get together and catch up on life. In summer, however, these gatherings sort of decrease in number, but the kids of all neighbors still play together very frequently. They all like each other very much.
Because the kids would play every day in scorching heat, OP decided to put a deep freezer outside and fill it up with ice cream. She told each kid, through a note on the deep freezer, they can happily take more than one ice cream but keep in mind that everyone should get a piece. A solid lesson on sharing and it was working perfectly until a new family moved in who exploited this generosity from OP by starting to steal multiple boxes of ice cream every day from the deep freezer and emptying the whole thing very quickly. To teach those parents a lesson OP decided to lock them out of the deep freezer by putting a lock on it and giving keys to all the neighbors except the new family.

2. Because the neighborhood OP lives in is very small, everyone gets along very well. They even do cookouts for each other where everyone gathers and has a good time.
3. The ritual sort of declines in frequency when the summer comes. Usually, it’s just the kids of all the neighbors who get together and play outside.
4. Children playing outside in the heat concerned OP so she decided to put a deep freezer outside and fill it with ice cream.
5. She let the kids know ice creams are free and they can take more than one if they want but do keep in mind that everyone is as exhausted and heated up as you, so show care.
6. Things were working smoothly until a new family moved into the neighborhood. They would literally take out boxes full of ice cream and run home.
7. OP went to the new family and told them to slow down a bit and they said they would tell their kids not to do such a thing again.
8. But the very next day OP caught those parents stealing multiple boxes full of ice cream from the deep freezer. She forced them to put the boxes back.
9. The situation really frustrated OP. She wanted to do something about it without having to stop refilling the deep freezers because the other kids in the neighborhood did nothing wrong and deserved that ice cream.
10. So she came up with a solid idea! OP got a clasp lock and locked the deep freezers. She discussed the whole situation with each neighbor and her plan got mutual approval.
11. OP provided a key to unlock the ice cream freezer to every neighbor. She would use her own key to unlock the deep freezer herself whenever the new parents’ children wanted ice cream. The new parents and their children would not be allowed to take the ice cream themselves.
The case is simple. The new family took negative advantage of OP’s courteousness. This is no way of doing things. I think the idea of locking the deep freezer is perfect. I am sure the kids would’ve instantly realized why the freezer got locked. This would let the kids know their parents are not teaching them good manners. I mean, common! Where were they even taking all that ice cream? Whole boxes full of it, and multiple! My god, people are too crazy.

I am sorry sir and maa, but what you were doing with the ice cream is precisely called “stealing” which is done by people we refer to as “thieves”.
14. They were warned and they still didn’t correct their behavior. Now whatever the consequences are or will be, the new family will have to face them. This is the dynamic of the world.
15. Although OP sounded very confident throughout the story, she still asked the AITA community to know if locking the deep freezer was right or wrong.
