Ariel struggles mightily to stay on land with the human prince she falls in love with in The Little Mermaid and live happily ever after. The concept of this young woman sacrificing everything she has ever known for a man offends current viewers.

The Little Mermaid, a live-action Disney production, will debut in May 2023. Some viewers are expecting that Ariel would be motivated by desires other than her affection for Prince Eric, even if there has been some debate among fans about how exactly the remake should resemble the original.
