You can talk about anything without being judged but some relatives do not respect others’ opinions and they want everyone to agree with them. But that’s not how it works. They would always turn everything into a heated debate and it gets awkward for everyone else. To avoid this situation, OP set up a boundary that everyone coming to the Thanksgiving dinner would deposit $500 and the ones who would not talk about politics would get their money back but the ones talking about politics would not get their money back.
