Teenager Asks If He Is In The Wrong For Wanting More Space In The Basement Which His Sister Took Over

Teenagers can be very self-centred.

I say this, In the best possible way. After all, I was only a teenager a few years ago. And when we reflect on our younger selves, we cringe at how we used to behave. Teenagers like to believe that they know everything and that their parents are stupid or something. And, while not every adolescent is like this, some are. They simply have not entered the real world with all of its responsibilities and believe they are owed everything. Of course, many teenagers are raised well and do not act brattish, whereas others lack empathy and become this way.

This guy, you see, had his own room as well as a basement space where he and his friends could hang out. But that was changed when his sister returned home. His sister apparently dumped a lot of her belongings in the basement, and he is now irritated by the lack of personal space. And, while it is admirable that he expressed his feelings to his parents, all he is doing is talking without listening to what others are saying. He clearly wanted his feelings validated, so he turned to Reddit. As you might expect, things did not go his way.

His sister moved back in for the holidays to save rent which is understandable.

But that meant that the basement that was ‘his’ was now filled with her stuff.

He is clearly irritated with this new development and communicated this with his dad.

The Father even went as far as to pay him the ‘rent’ for the basement until she moves out again.

However, the teen wasn’t having any of it and tried to talk to his mother.

I get that he is feeling ignored but this is not the way.

While I try not to be harsh on teenagers, he is not so young that he cannot understand why he is wrong. I can understand being selfish, but he shows no empathy for his sister. What amazes me is how understanding his father is. Few Fathers would pay ‘rent’ to their children for their own space. This is absurd and very nice, but the guy is still unsatisfied. He needs to learn how the real world works quickly or he will be in big trouble.

People in the comments weren’t on his side either.

And most if not all told him to reevaluate his priorities.

He is in desperate need of some real-world experience.

I do feel for the sister as the economy is hard right now.

Only thinking about yourself is not the way to go.

I do get similar vibes from him to be fair.

I hope he learns to be more empathetic.

Be kind to your sister, that is really it.
