Company Loses $40 Million After Losing IT Employee Who Quit For Being Terribly Underpaid

Companies often don’t realize the true worth of their employees. They often overlook the value of that one extremely important employee and it ends up costing the company a lot. That is exactly what happened in the story we have got for you guys today. OP worked in a company that manufactured components for the automotive industry. He and another employee were the only two “IT guys” at the facility who would deal with all the IT-related issues. The problem here was that OP was getting paid much less than his coworker.

Soon after OP’s boss retired, his coworker took the boss’ position and OP became a full-time employee at the facility as well as the only IT guy taking care of three locations at the facility but he was still getting paid much. Upon asking for a raise, the company did not facilitate him so he applied to a new place and gave in his two-week notice. That’s when the boss and the HR manager realized they would get in deep trouble because in the town in which the company operated in, there was no one with IT expertise and it would take them months to find an employee of OP’s caliber. What made matters worse for the company was an IT-related issue that came up the very night OP gave his 2-week notice which ended up making a $40 million loss for the company. Yes, you read that right.

Scroll down below to read how it all went down.

1. OP, who lived 2 hours away from the factory he works in, moved into the town where it was located after joining.

2. The factory OP worked for paid him way less compared to his coworker and it was still less than the other guy when OP got hired as a full-time employee.

3. After OP’s boss retired, the other IT guy got promoted and became OP’s new boss leaving him to manage all three locations all by himself and he didn’t get any raises or bonuses.

4. This is outrageous.

5. OP finally decided it was time to move on and gave in his two-week notice and in response his boss called him miserable.

6. After OP gave in a leaving notice, an IT-related issue popped up in one of the locations which everyone wanted to be fixed by OP at 2 a.m. in the morning…for free. Nope, not happening.

7. OP did nothing and enjoyed the company losing $40 million due to the IT issue. Hope the boss is enjoying his Costa Rica trip.

8. OP explained how the company lost $40 million in the comments of the story.

9. It was basically a software issue.

10. The issue took place at the JIT site which dealt with the inventory.

11. Shutdown in the production of the facility meant a shutdown for the customers as well and in such a case, the company would have to bare 100% of the costs and losses for the customers.

12. And that’s how the total loss per minute came up to be a massive $218,000.

I am extremely disappointed in the coworker who got promoted to the regional manager’s position. He was already making over $90,000 while the company was only giving OP about $30,000. Surely, he realized the true worth of OP’s skillset and definitely knew being paid $30,000 for the services OP provided was horribly less and unfair. When he became OP’s boss, he should’ve raised OP’s salary. Not only because he knew the worth of the job OP was doing but also because his burden increased so much as he was the only guy in the organization looking after all the 3 facilities. Really sad. When coworkers won’t support each other how can you expect the senior management to do it then?

I feel like that $40 million loss was absolutely necessary for the company to realize the true worth of important employees.

Here’s another addition OP made in the comments:

13. OP took the contract at a lower pay because he was going get offered a full-time position within a year which would pay him much higher.

14. OP took the job to get his foot in the IT industry and for that town, it was good pay.

15. OP got lied to a lot throughout his time at the company.

16. It’s nice that OP realized believing in the company’s BS was really not the way to approach the situation. He was stupid for doing so.

17. Had OP known his true worth as an IT professional he wouldn’t have gone through all this hassle.

18. The company had backup hardware in place for every single thing but the issue came in the software…and there was only one of that.

19. Just tells you the heavy significance of “management” in a business.

Via u/slw_motion_trainwrck

20. That is such a terrible policy.

21. The software that crashed was not a famous one in the industry which meant very few people had complete knowledge of it.

Here’s what the internet had to say about this:

22. Who would want to work for such people?

23. The exact opposite should’ve happened, they should’ve tried to retain him at all costs.

24. I really did think he would give OP the raise but no, it’s something about the managerial positions that poison your soul.

Via u/slw_motion_trainwrck

25. That is outrageously low.

Via u/slw_motion_trainwrck

26. That’s the way to go about it.
