Companies often don’t realize the true worth of their employees. They often overlook the value of that one extremely important employee and it ends up costing the company a lot. That is exactly what happened in the story we have got for you guys today. OP worked in a company that manufactured components for the automotive industry. He and another employee were the only two “IT guys” at the facility who would deal with all the IT-related issues. The problem here was that OP was getting paid much less than his coworker.
Soon after OP’s boss retired, his coworker took the boss’ position and OP became a full-time employee at the facility as well as the only IT guy taking care of three locations at the facility but he was still getting paid much. Upon asking for a raise, the company did not facilitate him so he applied to a new place and gave in his two-week notice. That’s when the boss and the HR manager realized they would get in deep trouble because in the town in which the company operated in, there was no one with IT expertise and it would take them months to find an employee of OP’s caliber. What made matters worse for the company was an IT-related issue that came up the very night OP gave his 2-week notice which ended up making a $40 million loss for the company. Yes, you read that right.

I am extremely disappointed in the coworker who got promoted to the regional manager’s position. He was already making over $90,000 while the company was only giving OP about $30,000. Surely, he realized the true worth of OP’s skillset and definitely knew being paid $30,000 for the services OP provided was horribly less and unfair. When he became OP’s boss, he should’ve raised OP’s salary. Not only because he knew the worth of the job OP was doing but also because his burden increased so much as he was the only guy in the organization looking after all the 3 facilities. Really sad. When coworkers won’t support each other how can you expect the senior management to do it then?
I feel like that $40 million loss was absolutely necessary for the company to realize the true worth of important employees.

18. The company had backup hardware in place for every single thing but the issue came in the software…and there was only one of that.
