Boss Expects Employee To Work Longer Than Their Last Day After Two Weeks Notice, Gets Put In Place

Defiant Employee

Life isn’t just about work.

People today appear to have forgotten to take care of their mental health and to not devote their entire lives to work. I can’t really blame the employees because it’s usually the upper management who puts people below them in situations like this, which eventually leads to us forgetting that anything other than work exists. Many workplaces expect employees to be available for work at all times, including after regular hours. This mindset can lead to burnout and decreased job satisfaction among employees who are pressured to prioritise work over their personal lives.

Employers must understand the importance of work-life balance and respect their employees’ boundaries. They don’t even give you a break if you decide to quit. That is exactly what happened to the original poster (OP) of this story as well. You see, OP had given their two-week notice, but when they returned to work, they discovered that they were still on the new schedule, which went much further than two weeks. The reason for this was that their manager believed OP had to step in because she couldn’t find a replacement in time.

OP isn’t sure whether they are in the wrong because they don’t want to work a few extra days since they aren’t going to be that busy.

OP had given their two-week notice, and February 11th was supposed to be their last day, according to the agreement.

The supervisor heard that OP was taking some time off since they wanted to take a break to take care of their mental health, but she took it to mean that OP was available for work.

The supervisor is pissed at OP for not working the extra few days, which has led OP to Reddit, asking for advice and whether they really are in the wrong.

We also got an update explaining why OP is taking a break, and while realistically they are available for work, it really shouldn’t matter.

OP also mentioned a lot of things they need to do in their time off, like schedule appointments, get their medicine filled, and other tasks.

OP didn’t want to leave the job on bad terms, but they’re sick and tired of how they are being treated and don’t know how to proceed.

OP doesn’t want to stay even a day extra at the job, and I think that is a valid reason in itself.

OP has clearly stated that they hate their job and are not willing to work an extra few days, so their supervisor should get the hint.

We also got a serendipitous update where the OP clearly stated to the manager that they weren’t available for work.

It boggles my mind that so many people think like this supervisor. Just because he was unable to find a replacement does not make it the OP’s responsibility. Whether or not the OP wants to work the extra few days is entirely up to them and should never be forced. Even if OP does not have much to do at home, this should not influence his decision.

I’m glad the OP didn’t crumble under pressure and informed the supervisor in no uncertain terms that they wouldn’t be available. I hope the manager learns his lesson, but I seriously doubt he will.

Just because OP ‘could’ doesn’t mean they need to.

Exactly. OP has no responsibility when it comes to this.

I doubt she would oblige, but that would be funny.

It is clearly the manager who is in the wrong; no questions were asked.

OP owes them nothing, and the supervisor needs to realise that.

The legality of it all would be quite messy as well.

I don’t think OP is being selfish at all.

They can’t make OP do anything after the set date.

It was a really dumb move on the manager’s part.

This is how one should respond to situations like these.
