Mom Refuses Discipline Middle Child With BPD After She Screamed At Eldest Sibling & Kicked Her Out

Today’s AITA story is a little bit of a mess that includes familial issues, mental health and b*tchy siblings. Sibling rivalry is a common occurrence in many households, but it can escalate into something much more serious in some cases. This is the exact situation faced by one family, where their younger daughter’s Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is being abused. This story starts with the introduction of three children: Ava (25F), Kendall (16F), and Darren (13M).

Kendall, who has BPD, has experienced her siblings teasing and baiting her to cause her to “freak out” for their entertainment in the past. However, after her late diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), the family thought the siblings had finally understood the seriousness of the condition. On a day off, OP’s teenager was taking some time to relax and sleep in, as she often does when she’s free. An hour later, OP received a call from her oldest child, Ava, who was absolutely livid. Ava explained that Kendall had yelled at her to get out of their house and wouldn’t stop until Ava actually left. When OP called Kendall afterwards, the teenager claimed that Ava and her younger brother, Darren, came into her room, giggling and shaking her until she woke, then abruptly left. She also added that she tried to go back to sleep but couldn’t.

Kendall was tired and had a rough week. She ran downstairs and asked what was wrong with Ava and Darren, who were both still giggling. She began yelling and demanded that Ava leave the home immediately. When OP came back, she refused to punish Kendall because she understood her frustration, but grounded Darren and took away his XBOX. Darren tried to argue that it was unfair of Kendall to throw Ava out of the home because he wanted her there, and that they only bothered Kendall for breakfast but OP didn’t buy into it. OP then accused them of trying to provoke Kendall, which they finally admitted, saying that they expected the teen to get only slightly angered instead of losing her temper. Sibling rivalry can be an ongoing issue in many households, but it becomes more significant and potentially dangerous when one child has a mental illness. For example, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) isn’t to be taken lightly and can make interactions with anyone difficult, particularly with siblings who provoke them for fun. Parents should aim for harmony in their family and should additionally must recognize the role that their child’s mental health plays in these interactions.
