Son Asks If He Is Wrong For Pocketing His Gift Money Rather Than Giving It To His Mother

Not all parents have the best of intentions.

When we are children, we all believe that our parents are perfect beings who can do no wrong. So it’s always a surprise when we grow up and realize they’re human and fallible after all. However, not everything our parents do can be classified as a mistake. After all, true love is supposed to be unconditional, and if you stop ‘loving’ your child because they don’t do the same things you do or because they turn out to be different than you expected, did you really love them in the first place? I am sure some will disagree, but it is a parent’s responsibility to educate their children and provide their kids the care and support at least until they are adults.

However, this is not how many parents behave. They have the audacity to portray themselves as victims when they are the ones abu*ing their children simply because they are dissatisfied with them. And you can see that right away in this story. The mother of the protagonist of the story believes it is acceptable to keep the money that her child receives from relatives. It would be acceptable if she were saving it for her child’s future use, but that is not the case. She also believes it is her right to do whatever she wants with money that was never hers to begin with. So she was furious when her child decided to keep that money for themselves. However, the story is much more depressing than what I just mentioned here.

Even from the title we can tell that this is going to be hard to read for many.

But the heart of this particular story is the issue with the gift money.

Usually, their mother takes all the money.

This time, they pocketed it for themselves.

Their mother quickly caught on and asked them.

They lied and first but the truth was eventually revealed.

Now the mother is quite angry with them.

And she wants OP to give her the money.

We also get a bit more information about their relationship with their mother.

And it doesn’t seem like she is a great person.

They also mentioned going no-contact with some family members.

No wonder they want to do this.

However, it is at least nice to see people on the internet coming together to support a stranger.

Reading scenarios like this one is truly heartbreaking. Even if we ignore the money issue, the mother appears to be a horrible person. I understand that many people in the older generation are conservative and don’t understand a lot of things, but kicking out your own child because they are different from what you initially thought is abhorrent behaviour. A parent is expected to accept their child regardless of circumstances. I’m glad OP mentions going no-contact as soon as they leave the house. The woman does not appear to be someone with whom you should maintain contact. It’s also surprising how entitled she acts when it comes to money.

People had a lot of advice to give to OP.

It really is as simple as that.

At the end of the day, it is their money.

What do you think about this story? Do you think OP should sue their mother for the remaining funds? Or do you think they should stay as far away from her as possible? What would you do if you were in this situation? Please let us know in the comments section below.
