Boss Gets Angry As Employee Refuses To Cover For Another Worker’s Shift Because His Son’s Game Is On That Day

One of the biggest factors that cause an organization to crash right into the ground is a lack of alignment between the managers and the employees. As an employee, you want to organize yourself in a way that you maintain a good work-life balance. If you can crack that, you are at an ideal workplace and you shouldn’t leave it any time soon. However, that employer’s manager/employer thinks of a settlement the other way around. They want the employees always the ready to work whenever they are called upon. This includes overtime, working on a day off, working another employee’s shift, or a combination of all three.

One thing that happened in the story have got for you guys today is not something that happens too often at the workplace. I mean, the route followed by this bad boss is the same as the one I mentioned that most managers/employers take. But this one went a step further and told his employee that his job is far more important than anything in his personal life. Yup, that can pinch a nerve or two.

A TikToker who goes by the name “Rich the Recruiter” shared this story by making a TikTok that he found on the infamous subreddit “Anti Work

The TikToker kicked his advice off by saying “The internet’s favorite game, ‘Why can’t I keep people working for me?'”

The Reddit post was captioned “Do you think I can actually get fired for this?” by the employee with whom this event took place. He then proceeded to share screenshots of a conversation he had with his boss. The TikToker said there was no way an employee could fire for what happened.

Here’s the interaction that took place between the employee and his boss:

The boss contacted this employee to cover a shift for another worker who didn’t show up or probably quit the job. However, the employee was quick to say no as he had to attend his son’s game on that same day.

The employee prioritized his son’s game over work that day and it wasn’t even his own shift which would’ve made some case for the boss. It was a request to cover up for another employee. So the employee deemed it best not to go to work and spend quality time watching his child play. However, the boss did not take this too well.

The boss hit the employee right on the nerves by saying one of the most insensitive things I have ever read.

The boss basically said the employee’s personal life did not matter at all. That he is a slave to the company he works in and should report to work at once. That is what I make out of that horrendous text message sent by the boss.

The boss informs the employee, in a much better tone as compared to the one used in the previous message, that he was told at the time of hiring that he may be called to work in emergency situations.

Now I don’t know how long did it take for the whole conversation to complete, but I am sure it must have taken some time for the boss to regain his composure before sending that second message. I mean that first message about his personal life meaning nothing to anyone was so out of order. I have a question though, does he think he can convince the employee with that tone? I don’t think so.

The employee responded by saying it’s actually the manager’s job to look after the mess created by other employees. To which the boss said he is busy so he cannot cover the shift.

Wow, now when the employee tells the boss that it actually is his job to cover the shift for the worker who didn’t show up for whatever reason, he said he was busy on the weekend. This moth*rfu*cker berated the employee for saying he was busy on the weekend and now he said the exact same thing. His being busy is okay and a person working under him being busy is not? What a hypocrite!

The boss told the employee to come in and they will have a talk. But OP just wasn’t going to go to work on a day he had decided he wasn’t going to.

This is so out of order. The leadership of any organization should always have a backup in place for such situations. It is unfair to demand one employee to cover for another. Why would anyone do it? I mean sure if you give me a double bonus, I will definitely show up. But ordering someone and then telling them their personal life doesn’t matter, I just didn’t understand what this boss was trying to achieve here.

I really like that OP said no. Imagine how bad his son would’ve felt had he not shown up at his game. Family always comes first. Good job, Mr. Employee.

The TikToker was as disgusted by this story as you guys are right now after reading it. Just look at his reaction.

I don’t know who puts such people in the seats of bosses. This boss literally didn’t possess a single quality of a leader. A good boss understands the true worth of his/her employees as they are the main foundation upon which every single business in this world rests. It is the employees who make or break a business. So it is very important for bosses to respect their employees. And not just that, it is their duty to keep them motivated with benefits and incentives so the employees keep exceeding their potential and take the business to new heights.

Here’s what the internet had to say about this:

1. That would’ve been double-pinchy.
