Manager Wants Employee To Come To Work Despite Them Having Plans With Family On Their Day Off

People often tend to shift their own problems onto others. If you run a business and don’t plan or hire enough staff for a holiday weekend, it’s likely your responsibility, and something you need to address. However, it’s not uncommon for business owners and bad bosses, specifically, to blame workers when they can’t make last-minute changes to their plans.

In today’s story Reddit user took the aid of subreddit r/antiwork to share their experience including screenshots of a conversation with their boss. The boss asked them to work the next morning at 8 p.m. the night before, on a holiday. When the worker explained they were spending Memorial Day with family in another state, the boss tried to convince them to come in, claiming they needed them to “step up” and expressing disbelief at their refusal.

1. You know OP didn’t like the texts he received because there are three dots at the end of the title.

2. OP received a message from his boss at around 8 p.m. to show up for work the next day despite it being a holiday. He replied by refusing to come as he was visiting family on that day.

3. The boss kept giving rationales for why he needs to be at work tomorrow but OP was clear in telling him he was in a different state altogether to visit his family, and it was going to be impossible for him to show up at work the next day even if he wanted to.

4. This made the boss very angry as he went off at OP about complaining before about not being paid enough and now not working for more money when he is being given a proper opportunity to make good bucks.

5. OP found the boss’ messages completely out of order and disrespectful. He told his boss he won’t be responding to any more of his messages.

It is beyond me how this guy managed to land a position of a boss because this behavior is exactly opposite to those bosses exhibit. It is undeniably cruel to first schedule an employee for a day off and then demanding they show up for work on that exact day. Have some heart, dude. I am glad OP stood his ground. It is very important to let such bad bosses know that the people working under them in the organization provided their services in exchange of a pay, they are not slaves to anyone.

OP needs to quit as soon as possible and move elsewhere as although OP refused to show up, this disrespect is not worth it.

The internet had a very clear stance. Here’s what they had to say:

6. The boss’ school of thought seemed like it came out of a fictional movie.

7. They still think they hire slaves, not employees.

8. None of it.

9. You do not deserve this and they do not deserve a notice either. Quit and move on.

10. This needs to be reported. If there is no HR, go to the employee tribunal.
