10 Times Movies Changed The Story From Their Real Life Counterpart

Real life is crazier than the movies.

I understand that there are loads of movies out there and I can’t really say this statement when there are dragons flying around in some movies and humans with magical powers. However, there have been so many real-life stories that will blow your mind. And that is why a lot of filmmakers want to recreate these stories on the big screen. Whether these are happy events or depressing ones, interesting stories make good movies.

However, when it comes to movies, this does not mean that everything can be left alone as is. After all, the film’s production team must exercise some creative licence in order to make the film more appealing to the audience. Sometimes the change is for the better, and other times it is for the worse. There are even a few instances where a change is made to make a character more appealing to the general audience because the truth is usually more horrific than fiction.

These are some of the films that took creative liberties. It is up to you to decide whether it was good or bad. So, scroll down and take a look for yourself.

The Titanic movie is quite heartbreaking but it only focuses on one love story of the character Rose who ends up surviving.

However, 1500 people died on the actual Titanic and a lot of the bodies were never even found. There is one particularly horrifying story about a gentleman named Humes who was on the Titanic as a performer. The company that outfitted him had the gal to send his pregnant widower the bill for the outfit two weeks after the sinking of the ship.

#3 Remember the Titans.

This is quite an inspiring story about a guy who thrives after being adopted and receiving the education that he deserves and needs.

However, the real-life NFL player was less than thrilled with his depiction and this is what he had to say about the movie.

I felt like it portrayed me as dumb, instead of as a kid who had never had consistent academic instruction and ended up thriving once he got it.

#5 Erin Brockovich.

This movie ends on a high note, specifically when the character Erin wins the legal battle after the water supply in Hinkley, California is contaminated with chromium.

However, the real-life story continued on after that. And it was found out more than a decade later that the chromium plume found underground had actually kept growing.

Argo was and still is a great movie and it is all about the incident in 1979 when several Iran hostages were saved by deceiving the captors into thinking that a film was being made. The film hailed the CIA as heroes.

However, Jimmy Carter, who was president lauded the film as being great but also pointed out the inaccuracies and thanked Canada’s ambassadors since they has a big hand in the incident.

#7 The Greatest Showman.

20th Century Fox

The movie might portray the circus as a big happy family and P.T Barnum but that was not the case in real life.

He was evidently quite the unsavoury character and the famous bearded lady even broke off from the circus to advocate for circus performers’ rights.

#9 The Prince of Egypt.

DreamWorks Animation

The Prince of Egypt is not a popular story when it comes to the classics but it is still beloved by many. However, did you know that it was banned in the country it is based upon?

The reason behind the banning was that it depicted a prophet which is frowned upon in some religions. Not only that but people argue that the depiction of Hebrew slaves was not at all historically accurate.

#10 Mulan.

Disney

In the original animated movie, Mulan goes back home and everything is okay. And while the new live-action remake did make some changes that align with the real story, it is still quite far from the truth.

In the real story, it is said that Mulan served between 10 to 15 years in the military and only then did she go back home and reveal her true identity.
