OP and their partner, both long-time vegans, have raised their 4-year-old son on a plant-based diet. While respecting his autonomy to make dietary choices in the future, they refer to him as plant-based until he decides to embrace the vegan label. During a family BBQ, OP’s mother-in-law offered the child a bite of her beef burger, prompting him to inquire about its origin. When the grandmother vaguely responded, OP clarified that beef comes from cows. This led to a tense situation, with the mother-in-law giving OP a disapproving look and later resulting in OP’s father-in-law criticizing them for supposedly alienating the child and suggesting an apology.
The family is divided, with OP’s brother-in-law acknowledging the parents’ overreaction but advising OP against being too specific about the nature of beef. Despite the familial tension, OP remains uncertain about being in the wrong and seeks external opinions on whether their actions were justified.

2. OP said their goal would be to instill vegan values in him but when he reaches the age where he could be able to choose what he wants to eat he won’t be punished
3. OP’s rest of the family is not vegan moreover, OP’s MIL insisted on throwing a birthday party for OP’s husband and they would be serving pizza, cake, and ice cream so OP had to bring their versions of food to the party.
4. Last weekend OP and the family went to the BBQ party at a relative’s house and as usual OP brought her food, OP’s son was sitting at MIL’s lap and she was eating a beef burger and asked OP’s son to eat and this was the first time he was asked to eat meat.
5. He asked the MIL whether it was cow or veggie MIL replied no honey it’s beef
6. OP said to her son that beef is another word for cow and the son was shocked
7. OP’s MIL gave her a dirty look and the son did not try her burger later, the father-in-law called OP’s husband and they thought OP was making MIL look like she’s some kind of an animal killer which was not the case
