In this post, OP reminisces about an incident that occurred about 15 years ago while they were an apprentice at a prominent coal mine in Germany. The coal industry was in decline, leading to financial constraints and an atmosphere of proving one’s usefulness, particularly within the management ranks. In response to what they perceived as an excessive number of sick days taken by apprentices, the top manager of their section called a meeting to address the issue. The manager presented a detailed report with statistics and charts, emphasizing the need for apprentices to personally deliver their sick notices on the first day of absence.
OP then had his own experience falling ill with a stomach bug shortly after this policy was introduced. When they called in to report their illness, they were instructed to hand in their notice personally to the manager. Although aware that this requirement might not be entirely legal, OP complied with it. He arrived at the workplace, introduced himself to a room full of company higher-ups, and presented his doctor’s note, which led to a somewhat embarrassing situation for the management. This incident eventually contributed to the company reconsidering its approach to managing sick leave for apprentices, resulting in the rule being lifted.
