Many children conceal information from their parents.

I know our families teach us to be honest and not keep secrets from our parents, but that isn’t always a good idea. After all, always telling the truth is only a good idea if you are confident that your parents will not exploit you. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Even children require privacy and some sort of boundary, especially in financial situations. Some parents believe that they own their children simply because they gave birth to them and that it is perfectly acceptable to demand money from them whenever they require it. I’m not saying that children should not assist their parents when they are in dire need but it isn’t the responsibility of the child to sacrifice everything they want for their parents either.

And many people are inept at managing their finances in the first place. So, if the money you continue to give your parents will end up in an infinite black hole anyway, what is the point of giving it in the first place? That is the kind of situation this individual is in. They are much older than you may believe and have already retired. His parents have always been the type of people who don’t know how to manage their money and constantly come to their son to beg for more. And, while he tried to help them at first, it didn’t change their situation. So, rather than dealing with their issues, he pretended that he didn’t have much money himself so they would stop asking for it. That is until his son accidentally mentioned this fact to his grandparents.

You can see how that turned out by scrolling below.

Right from the start, it is clear that this is going to be a doozy.

However, we need to know why OP wants to hide his wealth.

He mentions that his parents are terrible at managing money.

And it seems his siblings aren’t any better either.

So they always come to him to ask for help.

And while OP and his wife pretend they barely have enough, his son didn’t know this.

Thus OP ended up in this situation.

I understand how difficult it can be to stand up to your parents, but everyone needs to develop a backbone at some point in their lives and tell their parents when they are being far too entitled. Just because they gave birth to OP does not entitle them to everything he possesses. However, I do not believe that pretending is such a good idea either. Why, in the first place, does he need to fabricate his financial situation? Why not simply put his foot down and inform his parents that he will not be giving them any more money?

Most people in the comments did say that he wasn’t in the wrong.

However, they also told him to be truthful.

It is better that he says no outright rather than faking his situation.

How else would his parents stop?

This might be a good idea as well.

At the end of the day, it is not his responsibility.

And he is not obliged to help them.

What do you think about this story? Do you believe he should keep lying about his financial situation? Should he just cut off all contact with his parents? What would you do in such a situation?
