A manager is expected to be familiar with their employees.
We’ve all heard stories about Karen’s mistaking customers for employees and then insisting on getting their way. However, this is the first time a manager has misidentified a customer as an employee. I understand that there are seasonal workers and that a manager cannot realistically know the name of every employee, especially if the company is large, but not even knowing your company uniform is absurd. I can understand making a mistake, but continuing to argue that this person should be working is hilarious.
Most of these types of stories irritate me, but this one is just so bizarre that it’s hilarious. From what I can tell, the manager wasn’t rude and was probably going through something to be so out of it. Or maybe he was high because I have no idea what he was thinking and how he forgot how the uniform actually looks. It’s also possible that he’s a new manager who hasn’t had time to get to know everyone. Whatever the reason, this is the outcome of this interaction.

Apparently, everyone wants to be mistaken as an employee so they can write about it.
It was a normal conversation until it took a turn.
It is clear that the manager was confused but that also confused OP.
He even clearly stated that he doesn’t work there but the manager could not understand.
While many people have been mistaken for employees while out shopping by an unsuspecting customer, this is the first time I’ve read a story where the opposite was true. Even if it isn’t as entertaining as watching a Karen lose her mind over not getting her way, it is sometimes refreshing to read absurd stories like this where you have no idea what is going on. I’d love to get inside this guy’s head and figure out what he was thinking when he started this conversation.
His head was clearly in the clouds.
People in the comment section found this whole interaction quite funny.
Everyone wants to quit on the first day.
I could understand this if he was wearing similar clothes to the uniform.
You never know and this could be true.
Apparently, Wally World has a reputation for stuff like this.
I cannot let go of the uniform thing though.
Maybe he was just high.
What boggles my mind is that OP let him know that he was shopping though.
This is taking stupidity to a whole new level.
Honestly, this is the way to go in this situation.
