Life is extremely unpredictable, you never know what is going to happen the very next minute. And this is why most of us try to live our life to the fullest, fearless because you never know you may not be alive a minute after planning an international trip. There is uncertainty in everything.
An example is the life of Reddit user u/goodbyemyboy, a 21-year-old guy who has a 1-year-old son, and lost his girlfriend and his other child while she was in labor. And it doesn’t stop there. He also got diagnosed with terminal cancer which only gave him 2 months to leave. All of this at such a young age is unbelievable!
OP, however, did not let his medical condition take over him as he had to secure his 1-year-old son’s future before he passed. He decided to make his aunt from his father’s side the guardian of his son, and she agreed as well. This decision involved some drama involving OP’s mother that you will be reading bout.
OP then created a lot of recordings, videos, and wrote letters for his son to view and read in the future that would allow him to be with his son on many special occasions in his life, and also to let his son know about his mother and sibling. After securing his son’s future, OP was ready to spend the remainder of his life in peace.

1. This is going to be a tough one to take in.

2. This is such an emotional start. OP only has 2 months to leave, his girlfriend and the other baby passed during labor, and now he has to think about his 1-year-old son’s future before he passes due to his terminal illness.

3. OP first thought of giving his son’s guardianship to his mother but then realized she was already too burdened with his brother and his 5 kids…which ultimately may result in his son being neglected.
Via u/goodbyemyboy
4. OP then approached his aunt from his dad’s side knowing she is a good woman…and she instantly agreed to take care of his son and provide for him at her best.

5. When OP’s mother got to know that OP has chosen his aunt as his son’s guardian, she felt upset about losing both him and her grandson.

6. Things got heated as OP tried to explain to his mother why he couldn’t give her this responsibility.
Via u/goodbyemyboy
7. OP really cannot let his emotions get in the way of this decision, it is about his son’s future. Uncertain if what he did was right or not, OP turned to the AITA community members.

Here’s how the internet reacted to this :
8. OP has to be absolutely sure that his son’s future is in safe hands.

9. Get the legal people involved to make no one messes anything up after you are gone.
10. That is the thing, it is about his son and not his mother. If it were the case, surely he wouldn’t have done anything that would upset his mother.

First of all, this has made me so sad. OP is so young and he has had to face so much and now has so less time left. I really wish he gets to spend the remaining time in the best way possible with his little boy.
I would also say OP was NTA. This is all about his son. He is only a year old boy. He doesn’t know anything other than how to crawl, walk a little, and scream for food. Being sure that he will pass away within a few months, OP has to make sure his future is secured and that he is under good care. He wants to be confident that he has made the right decision about the guardian. And if making his aunt the guardian and not his mother makes him feel his child will be more secure and well taken care of, then he should definitely go for it. I am sure his mother would understand.
Here’s an update OP shared that may make you cry even more:
11. OP shared that after a few days of the heated argument he had with his mother over guardianship, the mother finally realized it would be beneficial for the child if OP’s aunt became his guardian.
Via u/goodbyemyboy
12. OP’s mother already has to do a lot to make sure her other son’s life is in order…which would in turn result in his 5 kids’ lives being in order.
Via u/goodbyemyboy
13. OP got in touch with a lawyer to have his aunt and her husband legally adopt his son. They would take custody after OP passes, till then the son stays with OP.
Via u/goodbyemyboy
14. OP created some recordings and videos for his son to view in the future on special life occasions.
Via u/goodbyemyboy
15. He covered all occasions, his son getting into a relationship, leaving secondary school, going to university, getting married, and having kids. OP wanted to be with his son to cherish all those moments together.
Via u/goodbyemyboy
16. OP also made some notes and letters for his son that shared the truth about his mother and his other sibling who had passed away before coming into this world.
Via u/goodbyemyboy
17. OP also created a little trust for his son leaving sufficient funds for him to not entirely depend on his aunt.
Via u/goodbyemyboy
18. After setting everything to the best of his abilities, OP now had to enjoy the remaining time he had.
Via u/goodbyemyboy
19. God bless you, OP. Your son will remember you as the best father in the world. Good luck meeting your girlfriend and your other child who you never got to see.
