Stand-In Manager Asked Employee To List And Explain All His Disabilities To Her

Imagine you are working at a company where you have a good relationship with your manager, who knows and respects your disabilities and provides you with reasonable accommodations. Dreamy, right? It sure sounds like one. Now imagine that one day, your manager is replaced by a stand-in manager, who lives out of state and has no clue about your situation. And then imagine that this stand-in manager emails you and asks you to list and explain your disabilities to her, in detail. How would you feel? What would you do? Dreamy once again, but this time it is a creepy/horror dream.

This is exactly what happened to a Reddit user u/CumGoblin, who posted their story on the r/legaladvice subreddit, seeking help and advice from other users. Their story sparked a lot of comments and discussions about the legal and ethical aspects of disclosing a disability to an employer, and how to handle such a situation.

Today we will read through OP’s story and try to depict who was thinking what as the events proceeded. Be sure to share advice in the comments section for OP. What do you think he should do?

1. Don’t even need to read the story to say this is so insensitive.

2. OP is disabled and his previous manager helped him in every way possible to make sure his disabilities never come in the way of his motivation to work.

3. The manager created such an environment for OP that made him feel he could anything that a normal person could do there.

4. However OP shared that in the last few months, from the date of sharing this story, a lot of employees started leaving the company. So many people left that there only remained 5 warm bodies in the workshop. Even the good manager left.

5. The stand-in manager upon realizing none of the goals are being achieved finally decided to do bulk hiring.

6. Trying to micromanage, she started thrashing the employees she had left at the company to work with. This included OP, who for some odd reason the stand-in manager wanted to list down all his disabilities and explanations for them.

What the actual f*ck? Why would she be interested in knowing about OP’s disabilities? Did she do that to shame her? I have so many questions right now and my blood is literally boiling. People feel so entitled just because of the positions they sit in. I genuinely am questioning the credibility of those who hire such terrible people in the corporate world.

7. Just like us, the readers, OP had no idea either why he got asked this. He felt really uncomfortable.

8. There are other disabled employees in the company but OP was the only one who got this email.

Here’s what the internet had to say about this:

9. No need to be direct with the manager. Go through HR on this one.

10. She could’ve just checked the archives and surely would’ve found something regarding OP’s disabilities. I really don’t think there was a need to specifically ask him to share all of that data.

11. Just find someone to take it up. Don’t let it slide.

12. She was only doing it to embarrass you. That is all.
