Employee Contacted By Ex-Boss Asking For Help After He Was Fired 20 Years Ago

Memories are not always trustworthy.

I know that many people believe that if you remember something, it must have happened. However, our brains can be finicky, and it is not impossible to remember events in a different way or remember things that never happened. Because so many people go through this, it can be difficult to trust your own mind at times. And just because some people have a great memory does not mean they will remember something that happened a long time ago.

I’d say I have a good memory, and I remember a lot of things that happened years ago, but they’re usually important events, not where I saved something at work years ago. This would be difficult to remember unless you have perfect recall. But that is precisely what this supervisor desires from the poster of this story. Did I mention that the original poster was fired 20 years ago? It’s difficult for me to remember where I put my glasses while I’m wearing them, so remembering something that happened 20 years ago would be impossible (along with the fact that I was a baby at the time).

This is a short and sweet story where OP needs help deciding what he should do.

This all started when his ex-boss asked for help.

I’m actually surprised the boss remembers a former employee he fired 20 years ago. After 5 years, I forget people’s faces and names, so this is quite surprising. Not to mention how he expects OP to remember such a thing. If, by some miracle, OP remembers, he should definitely charge up the wazoo for this “assistance.” After all, OP has nothing to lose and everything to gain, but this interaction with the ex-boss appears to be precarious.

People in the comments were quick to give advice.

And most if not all of them told him to charge the boss extra for this.

I do think it is fair that he gets some extra pay for this.

After all, remembering something that happened quite a long time ago is more difficult than you may think.

We obviously need to take inflation into account.

If this ain’t the truth!

Did he really expect that to happen?

To be fair, this makes a lot of sense to me.

If my previous boss called me up and asked something similar, I would laugh as well.

I am pretty sure this was happening when he wrote asking for advice.

The perfect answer, short and sweet.

And yet a lot of companies don’t understand this simple fact.
