She had accepted a job with the understanding that she’d work reasonable hours. But it turned out to be false, as her boss began calling her late at night and on weekends, expecting her to come in. 1. We love a good workplace drama.

2. OP accepted a job solely because of the way the management was hyped for striking a great work-life balance.

3. The reality, however, was the exact opposite.

4. OP would never answer her work phone after the clock crossed 5 p.m. or the whole weekend.

5. OP’s boss would reach her on her personal number to request work after hours.

7. OP asked him to just create official meeting requests and put them on her calendar if he wants her to attend those.

8. But he said he would call like this to ask employees to come in for work after hours. It wasn’t to do any meetings.

9. OP said her weekends are already committed for promises made weeks ago. If the boss really wants her to show up on a weekend, she needs to be informed many weeks before.

10. OP made it very clear she wasn’t going to exceed her 9 to 5 to work for her boss.

I am sorry boss but if you wanted me to work more than the hours I signed up for, you should’ve made it explicitly clear in my job description…at the time of the interview. You can’t convince me to be kind to work for you. If that results in me being an unfair person, so be it. But I am never going beyond that 5 p.m. mark. Why, you ask? Because I prioritize my happiness and mental health over everything in this world.

11. OP’s co-workers got frustrated with this behavior of hers because she didn’t conform to a norm they had already conformed to.

12. OP said she agreed to her pay based on the regular hours. If she isn’t being paid extra, she won’t work extra.

13. Family over work. That’s precisely the moto OP followed in this story.

14. The matter was taken to the courts of the AITA community by OP to know if what she did was right or not.

17. I don’t think he should. That way he would surrender to the norm in that office. He must change the norm.

19. Even if they compensate the extra hours by paying more, I would still stay no to working even a minute beyond my agreed 9 to 5.

20. Unfortunately, your coworkers are the ones who have accepted and normalized this treatment.
