Teachers Share The Ugly Truth About The Students That Are Significantly Behind

Teachers have a particularly difficult job.

I’m sure we’ve all heard that teachers always get the short end of the stick because they have to deal with cheating students and entitled parents, to name a few issues. Furthermore, teachers are not adequately compensated for dealing with the mess. As we all know, teaching is a difficult profession that requires patience, dedication, and a desire to help students learn. However, educators are facing increasingly difficult challenges as academic performance appears to be declining over time. Despite their best efforts, teachers are struggling to engage and educate students who are perceived to be “dumber.”

When I use the word ‘dumb’, I truly mean it, even if it appears harsh. According to many teachers, a large number of children are significantly behind on the basic skills that the previous generation learned while young. You’d think that with the Internet and all of the new tools, the younger generation would be the smartest of all, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. You may think I’m being dramatic, but some of the things mentioned by the following teacher really boggle my mind. Of course, this list does not include overachievers, and we cannot claim that every child is like this, but a sizable proportion of children are experiencing the issues mentioned in this post.

Honestly, it really is ugly, but everyone needs to know since this issue affects us as a society.

I do believe that everyone learns differently, but pre-teens not knowing what basic shapes are is truly eye-opening.

OP is a teacher themselves, and they listed just a few things that they have seen while in this profession.

Apparently, a lot of students don’t know basic punctuation and cannot even spell simple words, and the teacher is clearly not talking about bilingual kids whose first language isn’t English.

To be fair, I don’t remember all the multiplication tables either, even though I had them memorised when I was a kid.

Kids also don’t understand basic equations that most of us learned while we were in middle school.

You know how exams don’t have copy-pasted questions from the books, but they still use the same formula to solve them? Apparently, some kids are unable to understand that concept.

The fact that kids cannot even Google something properly and stop before clicking a link to open a page is truly mind-boggling.

I thought everyone was a decent type these days, but apparently, some kids cannot even use a computer properly.

OP tries their best to fill the gaps that these students have, but it isn’t easy, according to them.

Many teachers quit because they’re tired of being vilified by their parents for not doing their job when they are trying their best.

All of the things mentioned above in the list can be reduced if only the kids had a good foundation that they could build upon with knowledge.

The OP also mentions that this does not apply to every kid out there, but there are always going to be more average students than overachievers.

I was completely unaware that anything like this was happening. To be fair, I am not a teacher, but I did notice something odd when I tried private tutoring for a while, and the few kids I worked with didn’t know basic equations or even what nouns were.

Now, I’m not saying that everyone knows these things inherently, but even after extensive explanations, they still couldn’t understand them, or perhaps they didn’t want to try. At the time, I assumed the children I was dealing with were anomalies, but it appears that this is happening everywhere.

A lot of people in the comments also had similar experiences to share.

It is not only scary but also incredibly sad.

Honestly, it seems made up, and that is terrifying.

Anyone would be able to intercept what produce means by the sentence around it, right?
