Gifting presents to anyone, whether you know them or not, is considered good behavior. I have never seen someone getting free gifts saying they felt annoyed. Unfortunately, in today’s story that is exactly what happened however, there was a major twist associated with it that will unfold as you read the story.
Reddit user u/aitacultureclash shared she had been taught as a part of her culture to always bring along something for whoever she visits. So implementing this cultural habit, when she and her boyfriend decided to have lunches at his parents’ house on a weekly basis, she started bringing small gifts along for all her boyfriend’s family members. This went on for months and the parents loved it. Howver, one day out of no where the boyfriend called OP out for considering her parents a charity by taking small items for them and also shared they were annoyed of this ritual.

1. I have heard about this particular phenomenon before.
2. I think this should be dedicated to being nice and shouldn’t have anything to do with culture. Anyone who is nice never goes empty-handed to anyone’s place.
3. No matter who it is, OP has been brought up to take something to their house with her.
4. Since OP and her boyfriend both worked from home, he suggested they go to his parents for dinner on a weekly basis. OP liked this idea so she agreed.
5. Every week when the two would go there for dinner, OP would bring something small along for everyone to pay her gratitude, just implementing her cultural values.
6. Uh ho, looks like something out of the ordinary happened.
7. One time as OP got some gifts, as per routine, and prepared to attend the family dinner, her husband confronted her, in a bad way, for considering her family a charity.
8. OP felt so confused as she had done the someone with everyone she would meet. It was nothing but courtesy.

10. When he got home, the boyfriend apologized to OP and told her that his parents weren’t happy and would feel annoyed at OP for bringing them these presents every week.

Seriously, this is so confusing. OP is bringing them gifts every week. Who gets annoyed by gifts? I would happily accept free items every single day for the remainder of my life. I feel like there is more to this scenario. Perhaps a particular gift made the parents angry or maybe the boyfriend didn’t like this cultural habit of OP’s.

17. It was him. It wasn’t the parents, the boyfriend had texted OP from his parent’s phone pretending to be annoyed of the gifts.
18. The boyfriend’s parents had started pushing him to get settled with OP, to marry her. OP, in her heart, had the same intention but perhaps not the boyfriend.
19. The boyfriend was afraid to commit and had no plans to do so any time soon. This reality made OP cry.
20. The whole idea was to make OP apologize to his parents and then to him, to which he would only agree after transforming their bond into an open relationship.
21. Oh boy, he had created a master plan comprehending every single factor.

23. After a few days of giving the whole situation a thought, OP broke up with her boyfriend and also told her now ex’s parents about everything.
