When a beloved family pet passes away, it leaves a void that can be especially hard on certain family members, particularly children who share a special bond with their furry companion. Making the decision to adopt or rescue another pet can be a way to honor the memory of the lost pet and bring comfort to the grieving family. However, it’s crucial that everyone in the household is involved in the decision-making process to ensure that all members are ready to welcome a new furry friend, even if it means taking time to heal first.
In a recent story shared on the subreddit “Am I The A$$hole?“, a family navigated the emotional aftermath of losing their cherished pet. While the family was eager to move forward by getting a new dog, their son was still deeply mourning the loss. Despite his objections, the parents decided to surprise their daughter with a new puppy, causing further distress to their grieving son and sparking accusations of favoritism from their in-laws.

1. This is a sensitive one!
2. The passing of their family dog sent OP’s 10-year-old son into a trauma. Their 8-year-old daughter was sad too but she moved on quickly.
3. The daughter soon after 5 months started asking for a new dog. The parents liked the idea but their son absolutely loathed it.
4. The parents were caught by a genuine dilemma.
5. In the end, the decision was made in the daughter’s favor.
6. As soon as their son saw the puppy, he had a breakdown and wanted to run away from the house.
7. OP’s MIL took her son and later accused her and her husband for favoring one child over the other.
8. OP asked the AITA community if what she did was right or not.
YTA. Losses are not easy to cope with. The dog adoption could have waited. Besides, I don’t think the daughter was attached toward the dog anywhere near as much as the son was. This leads me to believe that the little girl probably didn’t have a new dog on her bucket list as much as OP and her husband thought she wanted one.
The kid is only 10 and it is sad that there is already a big strain on his relationship with his parents.

9. OP shared an edit to clear some things up.
10. Later in an update she shared the decision was being turned around and the family was planning to rehome the pup.
11. Now that is what you call a twist in the tale. Things changed for the better. They also do. All they require is some time.

Here’s what the AITA community had to say about this:
12. Poor kid had to go to therapy to cope with the loss. Was that not reason enough for you guys to not get a new dog?

13. A year of waiting could have made all the difference to their son. But no! You just had to make your daughter happy.

14. It seems that despite the fact that their son was open and communicative about his feelings, they literally did absolutely nothing to validate them.
